NFL Wild Card Weekend Preview/Predictions

Storylines, storylines, storylines. Every team playing in the Wild Card Weekend has its own story of just how it got into the postseason.

The Chargers made an improbable late bid to overcome a three-game deficit in the AFC West standings, which was capped off with a win over the then-leading Broncos in Week 17.

After a disappointing 3-4 start to the 2008 season, Peyton Manning and the resurgent Colts rebounded with nine-straight wins, yet still failed to win the AFC South.

With a rookie quarterback under center, the Ravens won 11 games and three of their losses (two to Pittsburgh, one to Tennessee) were decided by four points or fewer.

Recording just one win last season, a Bill Parcells turnaround helped surge the Dolphins to the top of the standings in the AFC East.

Just a few weeks ago the Eagles were in last place in what many consider to be the strongest division in the NFL, but they won four of their last five as their divisional rivals (Cowboys, Redskins) collapsed.

The Vikings won five of the last six after a mediocre 5-5 start.

The Falcons, like the Ravens, were led to the playoffs with a first-year quarterback.

Kurt Warner, 37, led the Cardinals to their first divisional title in my lifetime.

Indianapolis @ San Diego: At the beginning of the season the Colts and Chargers must have figured that they would have been off this week as the No. 1- and 2-seeded AFC teams. Both squads were plagued with injuries at some point throughout the season and now have to take the scenic route should one make it to the Super Bowl. Even though it is a wild card game, the Colts-Chargers showdown may turnout to be one of the best playoff games this season. With its win streak in tact, Indianapolis is the team to beat in the AFC. If San Diego can get by, it may prove to be the team that I thought it was in the preseason: the team to win the Super Bowl. However, without Shawne Merriman the Chargers aren’t the same team I thought they were.

Prediction:

Indianapolis Colts 31
San Diego Chargers 28

Baltimore @ Miami: In Week 7 the Ravens beat the Dolphins 27-14 in Miami. The Ravens scored on offense and defense, but more importantly, they stopped the “Wildcat” offense that has been one of the keys to the Dolphins success this year. Holding the Dolphins to just 71 yards on the ground, the Ravens defense won the game and there’s no reason to think that anything different will occur this time around.

Prediction:

Baltimore Ravens 27
Miami Dolphins 14

Philadelphia @ Minnesota: Since being benched in Week 12 against the Ravens, Eagles’ quarterback Donovan McNabb has made an impressive return to form. In the first 12 weeks of the season McNabb threw just 14 touchdowns and piled up 10 interceptions. Since then, McNabb has thrown nine scores and just one pick. Unless Adrian Peterson runs for three hundred yards, don’t expect the Vikings to make this an interesting game.

Prediction:

Philadelphia Eagles 21
Minnesota Vikings 10

Atlanta @ Arizona: Cardinals’ 37-year-old quarterback Kurt Warner may get out managed by 23-year-old Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan on Saturday. A sure bet, however, is that the Falcons are going to out play the Cardinals on the ground, and that should be enough to sneak out of Arizona with a win.

Prediction:

Atlanta Falcons 37
Arizona Cardinals 23
