Night of the Living Dead–Remakes Aplenty.

Remakes, remakes, remakes! When I heard that Night of the Living Dead, that great horror classic, had slipped into the realm of public domain I confessed to mixed emotions. I do believe in the right of an artist to hold his copyright for life…but at the same time, there’s something clean, and downright noble, about arguably the greatest horror movie of the 1900s going public domain.

If it can’t be in George Romero’s hands…then it’s well that it should go into OUR hands.

And then, the remakes came out to play. Nothing better to remake than a public domain film—no one can sue. The director of one such film seems to have the concept of respect well in hand. His version looks to be “cheap and gritty”—much in the same way Romero’s original ways. He also looks to correct some serious injustices by refraining from the use of “runners”, or later-era zombies that deviate from the standard Romero physics.

So for once I’m psyched about a remake—that’s rare enough on its own—but then, it’s just as rare that a remaker shows such devotion to the original source material. And frankly, if more remakes did that, well, then I’d be looking forward to a lot more remakes.

And until we can see the duly-supportable remake of Night of the Living Dead, try the original Dead series trivia on Kwanzoo.
