No Diamond in This Rough

pokemon.jpgI have been a huge Nintendo fan since I got an NES in 1987. Sure, I owned those other systems as well, but I always flocked to Nintendo. I was the guy making excuses for Nintendo and their fabled Dream Team during the N64 era. I defended the giant A button on the Gamecube controller. I even thought connectivity was a good idea. But somehow, despite my rampant Nintendo whoring, I had never played a Pokemon game. After finally playing Diamond last year, I am aghast that something so primitive and downright boring, could be so unbelievably popular.

Has anyone actually played this game? I mean sat down, went through the simple story and boring combat, and thought about what they were doing? Because it’s just outright insulting.

Oh, sure, I could understand playing a game like Diamond in 1995 and being blown away. I have a severe case of video OCD so the thought of hundreds of fictional creatures just waiting to be collected makes me squirm with eagerness. But the game built around this collecting process is so banal and poorly done, it sapped my energy quicker than a stack of pancakes.

So what is the appeal? Do the cartoons hypnotize people into believe what they are playing is fun? Are social interactions so limited these days that any excuse to talk to an actual human being (for trading purposes) is embraced like a lost puppy? Because I really don’t get it. There are RPGs out there with better combat, more engaging characters, beautiful worlds and even a massive amount of things to collect. There are better games out there!

Ugh, I’m exhausted just thinking about it. Take the Pokemon trivia. If you don’t, I’ll be subjected to another round with Pikachu!

Pokemon is kind of a kid’s game. Maybe that’s why you felt insulted. Personally, I enjoy the soothing gameplay and endless quest to catch ‘em all. Then again, I don’t go in expecting Bioshock. I have enough angst in my life; Pokemon is an escape. A brightly-colored, innocent escape. Nothing wrong with that.
