Ponyo on the Cliff–New Miyazaki Lunacy.
For reasons that defy all logic and good sense, at least from where I sit, Hayao Miyazaki has finished the storyboards for his newest film Ponyo on the Cliff.
And I Wish It’d Jump Off
Despite the fact that I am one of the five anime fans on the North American continent that can’t stand Miyazaki’s work, it’s still coming back. Miyazaki’s plotlines are better suited to hallucinations than to actual movies, his characters are either cutesy-poo or somehow defy the known laws of physics, and of course, the movies themselves are dull enough to be a Thorazine replacement.
Every Time I Hear That Man Talk I Have To Check My Medication
Wonder what I’m talking about? Here’s a quote straight from Miyazaki himself on the upcoming Ponyo:
[It is] a story like Tsuru no Ongaeshi (The Crane’s Repayment) or like one of those stories in which a mountain lord snake comes back as a handsome man. It’s a kind of IRUI-KON-IN-TAN (marriage of human and animal).
…Double-u. Tee. Eff.
Seriously, I can’t believe what I’m seeing. Are we even speaking English any more? I realize parts of it are in Japanese but some of that sure LOOKED like English! Too bad it doesn’t make a lick of sense!
Oh, but you guys apparently like this drivel. Put this one on my not-even-gonna-bother column, and let’s just go play some trivia. If you’re up for it, there’s Howl’s Moving Castle trivia among others on Kwanzoo, and that should make more sense than the movie itself.
