“Quantum of Solace” Mass Hysteria
I love it when people get all up in a lather about ill-informed movie tidbits in the news. The fantasy that someone, unknowingly privy to secret information, could accidentally spill the beans to millions of fanboys, is exciting. Something similar recently happened with Aaron Eckhart re: the Batman franchise, and I’m guilty of getting sucked into the speculation. But this one? This one is just too much.
WARNING: Those who haven’t seen Casino Royale and still plan to - what the hell are you waiting for? There are spoilers in this post, so please read it at your own risk.
Recently, Ain’t it Cool News pulled a tidbit out of a BBC piece that said, bewilderingly:
Quantum of Solace, the 22nd official film in the 007 series, picks up from Casino Royale as the secret agent sets out to avenge the apparent death of his lover.
By strict definition, “apparent” works here. It’s the wording that is confusing - if you said “her death was apparent,” it would mean exactly the opposite of what this implies. And what, exactly, does this imply? That Vesper, whom we all watched drown and lie dead while Bond attempted to revive her, is actually alive somewhere?
Personally I thought it was ridiculous, so I decided to visit my old stomping grounds at the CommanderBond.net forums to find out what people were saying about it. Fans immediately came to the rescue of doubters, many pointing out these important facts:
1. Eva Green has never been spotted on set and has specifically said she is filming nothing new.
2. Vesper is definitely dead.
3. Come on.
Forums member Mr. Wint says, appropriately:
The bitch is dead.
While Safari Suit speculates wildly:
She’s really a man! And a ghost! And Bond!
Tarl_Cabot sums up the common sense answer.
Or Bond is an idiot. Or…she had a secret breathing device…no, she’s…dead. Nothing to see here. Just some wording of an article that appeared to be provocative.
Forums member zencat, a real-life professional Hollywood screenwriter that I’ll be interviewing for this blog soon, puts it best:
If Vesper comes back to life, I’m turning in my fanboy license and throwing my collection into the street.
Move on, fanboys. There’s nothing more to see here.
