With a depression inches away and hurricanes and terrorists and pirates in Somalia and madmen running Iran and all the assorted whatnots and goings-on of the world around us, it’s hard to imagine how things could get any worse. Certainly, how things could get any weirder.
And then a new horror movie was announced. This by itself would mean almost less than nothing–such things are announced every couple of hours without the world exploding. So what’s got me so bent out of shape on this one? SImple. It’s the star of this particular horror movie, called Against The Dark, that’s set my head all a-spinning.

Apparently, they’ve got a writer for the Planet of the Apes prequel, a move that has me somewhat baffled.
They’ll be bringing in Scott Frank, formerly of Minority Report, to handle the scripting duties on that one, suggesting that if nothing else the script should turn out solidly enough. But that’s not where my concern is–my concern is in the existence of this movie in the first place.

Remember the last time I wrote about the antics of the Screen Actors’ Guild, plotting to go on strike in the face of the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression and said this would be funny if it weren’t
so sad and if the AMPTP weren’t also staring down a lawsuit from the Writers’ Guild of America as well?
Well, it’s about to get EVEN FUNNIER.

Robert Downey Jr. is an actor who likes to speak his mind. Or someone else’s mind. I’m not actually quite sure where he gets his ideas from, like when he decided to diss DC a few months ago by claiming that he didn’t understand The Dark Knight. I really don’t know what there was to “understand” about
The Dark Knight. I’m honestly not sure that RDJ does either.
His life and career have been a roller-coaster of ups and downs, from stardom to prison and back again. He’s on one his ups now, and hopefully it’s a permanent one - while many were skeptical at his casting (and Jon Favreau’s direction) for Iron Man, fans have fallen in love with his pitch-perfect portrayal of the alcoholic billionaire. While his snarky remarks about The Dark Knight were undoubtedly just pandering to fans - the guy has probably never picked up a comic book in his life - recently, he dealt out some much-appreciated honestly about the future of the Iron Man/Avengers franchise. You know, a lot of unpleasant things have been said about Scientology.
Allegations of mind control, embezzlement, and even death have swirled around the organization for years now, and show no signs of relenting. But when armed security guards shoot a guy out in front of their “celebrity center”, it definitely doesn’t help Scientology’s case one bit.

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith, planning to make the Oldboy movie, want to assure us in no uncertain terms that this is not a remake.
To which I respond: buh?

On the surface, “Quantum of Solace’s” title is ironic. Its meaning beyond that is not explained in the film. Quantum is simply the organization that Bond is up against, and solace is what there isn’t any of. The action almost never ceases, and there are few respites from quick cuts and death-defying stunts. It is an Action
Film.
But to say that “Quantum of Solace” relies on its action, as many have done, is unfair. “Casino Royale” simply couldn’t be this kind of movie, since so much revolves around men in suits sitting a table. If “Casino Royale” was about a card game, “Quantum of Solace” is about oil and water. Besides religion, nothing else has spurred so many wars in the history of humankind.

So I was bombing around looking for newsy bits to discuss–as I so often am–when I came across a little something on horror-movies.ca that got my ire up too.
Sometimes I agree with them over there…and sometimes I don’t. But when you get a load of this one, you’ll likely see why I’m on board this time around. Here’s the relevant portion, a good summation: Read more…
