Are You Watching The Boosh?

April 7th, 2009 Matthew Boyd No comments

Maybe you should be.

A couple of weeks ago, Adult Swim started airing Series Three of The Mighty Boosh, one of the strangest television shows to come out of Britain, which is no small order. Like other AS shows, it’s also going up for free on their website.

Fox Journalist Reviews Bootleg “Wolverine;” Seriously

April 6th, 2009 Liz N. No comments

These days, the content of a film passes through many hands before it lands in the DVD factory to be shrink-wrapped and shipped off to stores. If you really think about it, it’s amazing that more major films aren’t leaked on the Internet long before their release. Apparently, the upcoming “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” suffered from the perfect blend of fan interest and lack of respect to end up on the internet on April 1st. At first, it seemed like a joke. But those who downloaded it soon discovered that it was for real.

Venture Bros. Come With a Little Something Extra, Har Har

April 3rd, 2009 Matthew Boyd No comments

This is an important reminder that season 3 of The Venture Bros. is now out in stores. Not much can top the total awesomeness of the Season 2 box art, but making the DVD and Blu-Ray boxes look like the packaging of an old Atari game comes pretty close.

So, what kind of bonus features can you expect on the third installment of Venture?

Hello. I’d Like to Play a Game.

April 3rd, 2009 Liz N. No comments

For years, you’ve enjoyed movies about my antics. At times, you’ve turned to your friends and bragged that you have a much better way of getting out of my traps. You think you’re worthy of life. You’re convinced that if this happened to you, you’d get the better of me.

Niche Games From Japan: Baldr Sky

April 2nd, 2009 Matthew Boyd No comments

In Baldr Sky: Dive 1 - Lost Memory, players scoot a giant robot around an arena, moving in and out of melee range and attacking with a huge and customizable selection of weapons.

Baldr Sky’s polished gameplay wouldn’t be out of place in a Western game, but for one thing: The majority of the game is spent listening to spoken dialog and looking at static pictures of anime characters. It’s a blend of action and the visual novel genre that flourishes in Japan.

DVDs: Lost in Translation, Literally

April 2nd, 2009 Liz N. 4 comments

I, for one, am sick and tired of everything everyone says anymore being prefaced by something about the economy. “Well, in this economy…” “With this current economic climate…” “Times are tough all around, and…” It’s like, thanks. For a minute there, I’d forgotten about the impending societal collapse. But I appreciate the reminder! Really!

Action Games Good For Your Eyesight, Suggest Study

April 1st, 2009 Matthew Boyd 1 comment

Here’s some interesting news by way of Wired and Yahoo. A study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience suggests that playing action games may improve visual acuity.

This would represent a stunning reversal over my mother, who always told me I would go blind.

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad Madworld

March 31st, 2009 Matthew Boyd No comments

Madworld is an odd one, all right.

It bears more than a passing resemblance to Itchy and Scratchy from The Simpsons: Animated hyperviolence as a satire of the crass media culture, but also a convenient excuse to show someone getting their heart cut with a chainsaw.

Three Movies That Grow On You

March 31st, 2009 Liz N. No comments

Like a fungus, except not.

There are some movies that just don’t quite hit you the first time around. You walk away feeling a little underwhelmed, maybe confused, not quite sure how to feel about the whole thing. About five days later you realize you can’t stop talking about it and you want to see it again. You’re looking up clips on YouTube and browsing discussion forums on IMDB. (A dangerous game, but you simply can’t help yourself.) It’s never the same experience for everyone, but I have a feeling I’m not the only one who had this experience with some of these movies. As always, please light up the comments section with contributions of your own.

The Most Uncomfortable Moments of the Game Developer’s Conference

March 30th, 2009 Matthew Boyd No comments

I wish I’d gone to the Game Developer’s Conference last week. I didn’t even know they had an expo space open to the public until it was wrapping up. I could have brought back some quality anecdotes like these.

- Goichi Suda (Killer 7, No More Heroes) asks Emil Pagliarulo if Bethesda Softworks would set an installment of the postnuclear Fallout series in Japan. Pagliarulo replies, “Well, what can we destroy in Japan?” to which Suda can only say “Wow…” after an awkward silence.
