Know Your Role: DPS and Crowd Control

November 26th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 3 comments

The last leg of the MMO trinity, the damage dealer, has a simpler job than the tanks or the healers. They do as much damage per second as possible to whoever the bad guy is.

But they have one other important job, and I want you yahoos in pickup groups to pay attention to this: DO NOT STAB THE SHEEP.

A Conversation With Felicia Day

November 26th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 12 comments

Kwanzoo: We’re here with Felicia Day of The Guild. Could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself to begin with?

Felicia Day: Well, I’m an actor and a writer, I’ve worked on many television shows and movies as an actor, but lately I’ve become known for the work I’ve done on the web, including acting in Joss Whedon’s “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” and creating a web show called “The Guild”.

Alternative game controllers: The Belkin Nostromo n52te

November 25th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 1 comment

As a game controller, the keyboard has a lot going for it, but it has some problems too. For one thing, it might give you an outrageous case of carpal tunnel, or at least exacerbate it.

That’s why we picked up a Nostromo for the house, a hand module for PC games made by Belkin. Not only has it eased the strain on an aching wrist, it’s actually proving to be an upgrade over the keyboard in its own right.

World of Warcraft: Who are you working for!?

November 25th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 2 comments

Richard Bartle, author of the first MUD, is not cool with this quest in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King where you torture a guy.

Here’s how it goes: There’s a bunch of wizards hanging around the tundra. One of them has been captured, but they’ve captured one their antagonists in turn. You talk to the quest giver, and he says… Read more…

Griping about Fallout 3

November 25th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 1 comment

I’m enjoying Fallout 3 quite a bit, but it isn’t perfect. Specifically, the voice acting is driving me crazy. It’s a real earsore.

Thing is, the game actually has a bunch of lines that would be funny if they were delivered with the appropriate timing, or even if they were just text. Instead, it sounds like they got the actors in front of a mic, ran through one take each, and called it a day. It’s badly in need of some editorial oversight.

I got a chance to really get into the meat of Fallout 3 over the weekend. So far I’m really liking it.

Log in to WoW today and get a free bear.

November 24th, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

To celebrate the fourth anniversary of World of Warcraft, Blizzard is giving everyone a present.

“Sure, the 4th anniversary present is traditionally ‘flowers’” says the in-game mail. “…but in WoW, it’s ‘bear’.”

It’s not the riding bear with goggles. you’ll still have to buy that yourself. This is a non-combat baby polar bear. Daawwww.

Little Big Planet

November 23rd, 2008 Anna Peterson No comments

Little Big Planet is an amazing and unique game. The difficulty of the game is challenging, but never frustrating. It is a great product for gamers of all ages, and should be a little bit of an added incentive to anyone that has not purchased a PS3 yet.

The puzzles for Little Big Planet can be difficult at first, but are always solvable with a little bit of trial and error. The difficulty curve for the game takes a big step up to challenge the players after a few levels. There are challenges further into the game that will boggle anyone’s mind for a bit.

Shiny New Xbox Dashboard

November 22nd, 2008 Anna Peterson No comments

Behold and be amazed, the new Xbox 360 dashboard has been released for all to enjoy. Sufficient to say, it is a massive improvement from original dashboard. There are a few kinks to work out, but it is an overall sleek and appealing design.

The new tab design will take a bit of getting used to, but the categories are easy to navigate. The customization is not exactly advanced, but it looks very impressive. It is a beautifully crafted user interface and I applaud Microsoft for the update.

Know your role: The healer

November 22nd, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

Those seeking some insight into the mind of Obama’s FCC transition co-chair might want to take a look at his chosen profession in World of Warcraft. Fortunately, his shaman healer just happens to be the next role in our continuing series of explaining MMOs to the MMO-less, and hopefully teaching a few incompetent players how to do their jobs.
