Hot Summer Movies: Black Snake Moan

So hey. Is it just me, or are we having an unseasonably cold summer? I actually thought it was just me until I read some Twitter updates from friends all over the country, complaining about the wet and the cold. It’s just not right. Summer should be utterly unbearable. It should make your skin melt off. Right?

Well, in the absence of a really hot summer, it’s time to seek solace in some movies that feature the kind of heat we’re missing out on. It’s the only way. So brew up some iced tea and squeeze some fresh lemonade - next stop, the Deep South.

How the Wine Was Won

I’m trying to think of a snappy, eye-catching opener for this article about the upcoming film Bottle Shock. But I can’t think of anything, other than “I want to see this movie and you should too.”

What? You want to know more about it? Ugh. You readers and your constant questions! Fine, I’ll tell you why you should be excited about Bottle Shock, and I’ll even put it in an easy list format - which, according to my old journalism teacher, is the lowest form of writing.

She’s Gone, Baby. Gone.

My job as an entertainment blogger doesn’t give me many opportunities to talk about social issues. If they’re in a movie or a T.V. show, they’re fair game - otherwise, who cares? If people want to read the true stories that lurk behind some of our best entertainment, they’ll go elsewhere.

I happen to think that this story is very, very important. Not necessarily from a social activism standpoint - though there are elements of that as well - but from an “all humans should know about this” angle. It’s just a story that needs to be told, and if I can get it out to people who haven’t seen it before, then I’m happy.

New Teaser for Stone’s “W”

So hey, it looks like there’s a teaser leaked for Oliver Stone’s Bush biopic, W. Everyone keeps warning that it’s likely to disappear soon, but it’s been up for a while, in various permutations. Some videos have been taken down, only to be replaced by others. This one seems to be working currently:

New Red Band “Choke” Trailer - Yay.

Okay, try to follow me for a second. Every time someone writes about Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Choke, they have to explain what it’s about, and unfortunately it doesn’t make any sense. I mean, the book does. The book makes so much sense it’s crazy. It’s just tough to explain, that’s all. I mean, try to explain Palahniuk’s magnum opus, Fight Club. Go ahead! I’m waiting.

Anyway, Choke.

Overlooked from Cannes: “Blindness”

At the 2008 Cannes festival in May, a film premiered that hasn’t been covered much by the press. Starring Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, Blindness is the story of a society struck with an epidemic of blindness and the one seeing woman who must keep her ability a secret.

Blindness is based on the novel of the same name by Nobel-winning author José Saramago, who closely guarded film rights to his novel. He describes it as a “violent book about social degradation,” which he didn’t want to “fall into the wrong hands.” But director Fernando Meirelles was passionate about the project, so he sent his screenwriter and producer to convince the author to their side.

The Biggest Ticket In Hollywood Is Reese Witherspoon

It might surprise you to know that there’s a new top money-earner in Hollywood actresses, and it’s Reese Witherspoon.  Of course, it might not, being that I pretty much gave as much away in the title but still, you were probably at least surprised recently.

Apparently, Reese Witherspoon is netting roughly fifteen to twenty million dollars PER PICTURE.  Yeah, per picture.  This is especially handy considering that she shows up in roughly one picture per year, which means on an hourly basis, she’s making roughly ungodly dollars per hour.

W Casting–Somewhere George Bush Is Angrificationalized.

Sure sounds like a Bushism, doesn’t it? Well, it may not be a word, but Oliver Stone’s new movie, W, a scathing indictment of the material-laden Bush Administration is getting rolling and has, apparently been cast. Here’s the rundown, and what I think about it!

Josh Brolin as George W. Bush

Movie Trivia: The Screen Actors Guild–Like Dilbert Writ Large On The Universe

You’ve got to love the Screen Actors Guild, folks–this has to be the biggest collection of cretins and greedy morons on the face of the earth. These are the people you read about in Aesop and his fables, where the bird or dog or whatever sees its face in the water and decides it wants the grapes or bones or whatever that its reflection is holding.

And the latest proof of that comes from a “solidarity” rally the west coast division of SAG decided to launch. The east coast division claims they were told that the rally would be “pro-SAG” and not even slightly “anti-AFTRA”. This assertion turned out to be a total crockery as the “solidarity” rally turned into an AFTRA lynch mob. Perhaps even better was that the west coast division was poised to launch a seventy-five thousand dollar “education campaign” in the grandest fascistic style that would have torn into the AFTRA deal with producers. The Chicago local branch did not take this lying down, calling it “an unconscionable waste of our resources and our time. And Chicago’s rank and file does not support it.”
