Hellboy 3 Talk On!

It’s hard to believe, I know–we only just caught back up with Big Red at the theatres and already there’s talk of launching yet another Hellboy!

Apparently–and this is going to be interesting as all hell to devotees of the big red wonder–there was some difficulty in figuring out the script.  Johann was not always going to be the new team member.

I know, huge bombshell, right? But even better is when you hear who Guillermo del Toro wanted INSTEAD of Johann.  None other than vigilante / ghost / pulp fiction character Lobster Johnson.

Movie Trivia: Emily The Strange Movie–Why You Should Be Saddened

Vitriol, of course, is absolutely nothing new to me and you should probably be used to hearing it from me by now. But sometimes I’ve got good reason, and it’s those reasons I bring back for you to discover right here on this bandwidth, o my readership.

A long time back, in a Barnes and Noble far away, I found a book in the humor section about a certain young lady who went by the unusual name Emily the Strange. Now, this was something of an appeal to me personally, because strange stuff is my life and livelihood, so I took a look. Emily was indeed as strange as advertised, with a collection of cats and an equally extensive collection of bizarre events. It was downright fun reading about her.

Movie Trivia: Marcus Belby Actor Dead

No, seriously. It’s been a weird day for celebrity deaths, and Robert Knox, the actor who won the role of Marcus Belby in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was murdered recently while trying to protect his brother from knife-wielding assailants.

Apparently, Knox and his brother were out in Kent, which is in the southeast portion of England, when Knox and his younger brother Jamie got in a fight with two knife-wielding men over what was reportedly something to do with a stolen cell phone. The men attacked, reportedly stabbing four others, and Knox was taken to a hospital where he died of his wounds shortly thereafter. Police have opened investigations, and don’t believe as yet that the murder was gang-related.

Movie trivia: Dark Horse and Universal Cut A Deal

Let’s make a deal!Dark Horse Comics, the people who brought you comics like Hellboy and a host of Star Wars comics, have just signed a five-year deal with Universal Studios. What this means is that Universal now has carte blanche to develop all Dark Horse characters, properties, and future properties into movies.

It’s true that Dark Horse has some of the best comics out there, and Universal definitely has the mojo and box office might to get some of these comics converted to movies in grand style, but I’m concerned, somewhat. Comic book movies aren’t exactly proven as good sources. Sure, there’s some good examples out there, again, like Hellboy…but there’s also plenty of weaknesses out there, like Constantine. It all sort of depends on how the scripting turns out, but if Universal’s smart enough to put the comic book writers into the movie writing arm, we may well be in for a LOT of fantastic movies.

Dark Oz Gets Movie Treatment

We’re off to see the wizard…and hopefully we won’t be killed! For some reason, Hollywood is just loving the older fiction—first we’ve got two Alice in Wonderlands, and now, a…well…new to us version of the classic Oz. Based on the comic book “Dark Oz”, we’re basically going to see our familiar faces the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion converted into somewhat terrifying “dark” forms and then set over sections of Oz to rule by a pair of conquerors. Said conquerors, Ruggedo the Gnome King and the sorceress Mombi of earlier Oz works, probably believe that to have “familiar” faces ruling the denizens of Oz as tyrants will do quite effectively to demoralize them.

They’re planning to start production at the end of 2008, and I’m looking forward to seeing what will come out. After enjoying American McGee’s Alice, I think a little edge on some of the classics might be worth seeing.

Dakota Fanning and Neil Gaiman–Creepy!

You see what I mean? She’s just CREEPY!Fans of Neil Gaiman have even more reason to rejoice than ever before as the first official trailer to the new movie Coraline has surfaced. Coraline, starring Dakota Fanning, Ian McShane, Teri Hatcher, Keith David and Jennifer Saunders, is about a young girl who lives in a big house with a bunch of crazy personalities. And apparently, they’re not the worst they could be. Said young girl will find a door into a weird kind of “nega-verse” where everybody’s even worse than they already are.

The concept of a negative alternate universe isn’t exactly new—Star Trek’s been doing it for years. But putting Dakota Fanning in the movie automatically elevates it to “pretty creepy”. It doesn’t matter what kind of movie she’s in—if she’s in it, it gets the automatic bump. I don’t care if it’s Fuzzy Wuzzy Bunny Land Visits The Care Bears—if Dakota Fanning’s in it, it automatically becomes “pretty creepy” as far as I’m concerned.

There Lived a Hobbit

Remember when the Star Wars prequels were still a rumor? Those were happier times. Before “Annie” Skywalker, before Jar-Jar, before…

The HobbitAnyway, back then, there was a constant debate about those prequels. Were they real? Really really real? Would George Lucas truly grace us with more Star Wars to feed our greasy nerd habits? Yes, child, yes.

Of course, the end result turned out rather disappointing, but at least we had that time of blissful anticipation.
