Heath Ledger’s final role will always be The Dark Knight, despite the technicality of his appearance in the upcoming Terry Gilliam film, The Imaginarium of I Don’t Want To Type This Title Ever Again. But that doesn’t mean that Gilliam’s latest effort deserves anything less than our full attention, because hey, it’s Terry Gilliam.
A director who pretty much defines “hit or miss,” he’s favored us with both The Brothers Grimm and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Which should pretty much summarize it. His work on Monty Python, both as a writer/director, animator, and occasional maniacal on-screen presence, was all top-notch. I think the only non-Python work of his that I know is 12 Monkeys, a film that makes full use of Brad Pitt’s potential as an actor. Not enough films have done that. They’re starting to, now, but it used to be that 12 Monkeys and True Romance were pretty much it. If you want an idea of how fully his potential as an actor was used in the movie, let me explain: I watched it on a small T.V. without my glasses on, and I actually did not recognize him.
