A Very Merry Unbirthday To…Well, You’ll Find Out.

Huge news about the Tim Burton adaptation of Alice in Wonderland today as we discover who will be cast to play the Mad Hatter.

In retrospect, it’s not likely to surprise anyone just who got slated to play this, but it’s still a sort of surprise that they would go so obviously with this.  Okay, enough of a build up, let’s get right into the name:

“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” Update

Heath Ledger’s final role will always be The Dark Knight, despite the technicality of his appearance in the upcoming Terry Gilliam film, The Imaginarium of I Don’t Want To Type This Title Ever Again. But that doesn’t mean that Gilliam’s latest effort deserves anything less than our full attention, because hey, it’s Terry Gilliam.

A director who pretty much defines “hit or miss,” he’s favored us with both The Brothers Grimm and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Which should pretty much summarize it. His work on Monty Python, both as a writer/director, animator, and occasional maniacal on-screen presence, was all top-notch. I think the only non-Python work of his that I know is 12 Monkeys, a film that makes full use of Brad Pitt’s potential as an actor. Not enough films have done that. They’re starting to, now, but it used to be that 12 Monkeys and True Romance were pretty much it. If you want an idea of how fully his potential as an actor was used in the movie, let me explain: I watched it on a small T.V. without my glasses on, and I actually did not recognize him. (Your results may vary, especially if you are not near-sighted.)

Bean Canned! Lord of the Rings Actor Busted on Domestic Assault

Sean Bean, ladies and gentlemen, star of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, joins the latest in a growing string of (two) actors busted for assaulting loved ones in England.  Bean was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault and questioned by London police for six hours after Bean’s new wife Georgina filed a complaint, claiming that Bean “assaulted” her during a fight at their London home.

Oddly enough, she later completely dropped the charges and claimed, loudly and vociferously and verbatim, that she was fine and Sean was fine and everything was blown out of proportion and THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM BETWEEN THEM.

Hellboy 3 Talk On!

It’s hard to believe, I know–we only just caught back up with Big Red at the theatres and already there’s talk of launching yet another Hellboy!

Apparently–and this is going to be interesting as all hell to devotees of the big red wonder–there was some difficulty in figuring out the script.  Johann was not always going to be the new team member.

I know, huge bombshell, right? But even better is when you hear who Guillermo del Toro wanted INSTEAD of Johann.  None other than vigilante / ghost / pulp fiction character Lobster Johnson.

Movie Trivia: Emily The Strange Movie–Why You Should Be Saddened

Vitriol, of course, is absolutely nothing new to me and you should probably be used to hearing it from me by now. But sometimes I’ve got good reason, and it’s those reasons I bring back for you to discover right here on this bandwidth, o my readership.

A long time back, in a Barnes and Noble far away, I found a book in the humor section about a certain young lady who went by the unusual name Emily the Strange. Now, this was something of an appeal to me personally, because strange stuff is my life and livelihood, so I took a look. Emily was indeed as strange as advertised, with a collection of cats and an equally extensive collection of bizarre events. It was downright fun reading about her.

Movie Trivia: Marcus Belby Actor Dead

No, seriously. It’s been a weird day for celebrity deaths, and Robert Knox, the actor who won the role of Marcus Belby in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was murdered recently while trying to protect his brother from knife-wielding assailants.

Apparently, Knox and his brother were out in Kent, which is in the southeast portion of England, when Knox and his younger brother Jamie got in a fight with two knife-wielding men over what was reportedly something to do with a stolen cell phone. The men attacked, reportedly stabbing four others, and Knox was taken to a hospital where he died of his wounds shortly thereafter. Police have opened investigations, and don’t believe as yet that the murder was gang-related.

Movie trivia: Dark Horse and Universal Cut A Deal

Let’s make a deal!Dark Horse Comics, the people who brought you comics like Hellboy and a host of Star Wars comics, have just signed a five-year deal with Universal Studios. What this means is that Universal now has carte blanche to develop all Dark Horse characters, properties, and future properties into movies.

It’s true that Dark Horse has some of the best comics out there, and Universal definitely has the mojo and box office might to get some of these comics converted to movies in grand style, but I’m concerned, somewhat. Comic book movies aren’t exactly proven as good sources. Sure, there’s some good examples out there, again, like Hellboy…but there’s also plenty of weaknesses out there, like Constantine. It all sort of depends on how the scripting turns out, but if Universal’s smart enough to put the comic book writers into the movie writing arm, we may well be in for a LOT of fantastic movies.
