Know Thyself–Nic Cage and Rose Byrne in “Knowing”

What do you do when your child’s about to destroy the world? For once, we’ve got something from the “Not a Half Bad Idea” files—and it’s a mainstream Nicolas Cage movie. Okay, granted, it’s going to be a little familiar—remember when Nic Cage could predict the future, just not very far ahead, in Next? Well, this time around, he’s going to get the chance to predict a little farther out in his new thriller Knowing.

This time around, Cage is a schoolteacher who’s been assigned—I guess by the school itself—to examine the contents of a time capsule that was found at Cage’s son’s school. What he finds in there is somewhat disturbing: there’s a list of predictions inside the time capsule, and several of them have already come true. From here, this leads Cage to the unsettling conclusion that:

Planet 51–Perhaps the Graveyard For Jessica Biel’s Career.

Noooooo! MY CAREEEEEEERRR!Jessica Biel, who despite all logic and common sense, still has a career, but I think it’s finally starting to take on water. She’s gone to voice actress, you see, and will be playing the female lead (and probably the main male character’s love interest too), of Neera in the all-CG-spectacular Planet 51.

Why was I thinking Titan A.E. right from the start? Oh, yeah, because that’s what it sounds like. The inevitable tanking of Planet 51 looks to start in July 2009, which at least will give it a chance at the box office because its target audience will be out of school and looking for a way to blow an hour and a half on something that doesn’t involve studying.

The Day Keanu Stood Still

Somewhere, somehow, somebody thought it would be a good idea to cast Keanu Reeves in a remake of the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. I may be alone in this, but do we really need remakes of films that are already considered to be classics? Sure, we’ve improved our special effects just a teensy bit since then, but pretty much every Hollywood blockbuster proves that SFX don’t count for much.

The Day…Anyway, whether we like it or not, we now have Keanu Reeves in The Day the Earth Stood Still. At least he’s playing an alien, I guess. Recently, ex Python John Cleese joined the cast as Dr. Barnhardt, a scientist who is central to the story.

The Truth Is Out There. Maybe.

One of T.V.’s most legendary programs, The X-Files still has a devoted fan base. After years of silence, there’s finally good news: we have a new X-Files movie.

The X-FilesFor a long time, all we knew was that David Duchovny and nerd pinup Gillian Anderson would be returning. Hooray! Then she wasn’t coming back. Boo! Then she WAS coming back. Hooray! Now, more news has leaked, including a spoiler photo from the set that apparently means a lot to long-time fan of the show (or “philes”).

As someone whose sum total of X-Files experience is the occasional episode in syndication, I’m not sure what to think. Should I get the entire series from Netflix and try to catch up? Maybe not - it appears that this new film, casually dubbed X-Files 2, has nothing to do with aliens or with the show’s mythology. (Apparently “the show’s mythology” is another thing that means something to philes.) It’s not intended as a sequel to the first X-Files movie, either. Which is good, because I’ve only seen about a minute of The X-Files Movie in the context of the Mystery Science Theater Summer Blockbuster Review.

Bienvenito a I Am Legend 2.Here’s one from the “Duh Magazine” section—it shouldn’t come as a surprise to absolutely anyone that I Am Legend is still tearing up the box office, and as such, the latest Will Smith vehicle has a sequel in process. Gerard Butler - King of Internet Horror Gaming?

This! Is! Gerard Butler!Given that some of the biggest games right now are MMOs, it’s kind of interesting that, sometime in 2009, you’ll be able to see a movie about a game where people control other people in a winner-take-all killfest. They’re actually planning to call it, of all things, Game. And guess who’s in it?

This! Is! Not Quite Sparta!

Vin Diesel - The Standard Bearer For Geekdom

Vin Diesel–Standard Bearer for GeekdomWe all remember Vin Diesel from his various exploits - Riddick from Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, his foray into Dungeons and Dragons… he’s even got a mention in World of Warcraft, (seen at left) for crying out loud. So it should come as little surprise to anyone that his next role, Babylon AD, is going to be nice and science fiction-y.

Babylon AD puts him into the role of a mercenary on an escort mission, which is only a small deviation from his Riddick roles. And frankly, I’m okay with this. What some people might call typecasting, I like to think of as sticking to your strengths. Look what happened when he tried to break out of that role with that idiotic movie about being a babysitter. That was just sad. What came out of Red Baby was actually more palatable than watching Vin Diesel try to babysit.

Dave, Will I Dream?

2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space OdysseyAmong Stanley Kubrick’s diverse body of work, you will find this odd, slow-moving science fiction drama. It finds its roots at the beginning of time, and slowly unfolds to reveal man’s ultimate destiny: floating babies in space.

I don’t get it either. Almost no one does, and the critical response at the time of its release was mediocre. Today, however, it is considered to be a classic, and references to it in popular culture run rampant. “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

Them - Reptiloids, Jack Black, and Shaun of the Dead, Oh My!

So there’s a new movie in the works, and it’s going to bring together a lot of really wild elements into a combination that will probably be described as explosive. Jack Black’s setting up to make a movie with no less than Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead fame, and Mike White, the screenwriter on School of Rock.
