Dumb and Dumber: An Odder Couple You’ll Never See

Back in the dark dim depths of 1994, a new road-comedy / buddy picture emerged to the great delight of geeks and comedy lovers everywhere. Packing Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels into a vehicle that can only be described as bizarre on wheels, the duo played Lloyd and Harry, two guys who were just trying to get ahead in life, but were held back by their own crippling and mammoth stupidity. This was called Dumb and Dumber, and it made a whole lot of people laugh for better than fourteen years. It enjoys a cult following to this very day–which isn’t a surprise to me as I loved this movie–and grossed nearly three hundred million dollars worldwide, not to mention spawning both a sequel and a Saturday morning cartoon.

1408: The Great King Renaissance Beginning?

For those of you who caught it, you know that 1408 was one evil room. And if Sam Jack himself comes out and tells you it’s an evil room, you can take it to the bank with a deposit slip and a withdrawal for payday that it is truly an evil room.

Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows…. Okay, fine. You want to be John Cusack and laugh at me and take my really really amazing antique scotch and go on up there anyway? Fine. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Zombies, Cops, and Rental Fraud: The Legacy of Edgar Wright

Four years ago, no one in the United States had ever heard of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, or Edgar Wright. But when the 2004 film Shaun of the Dead hit U.S. theaters, they suddenly became cult celebrities. Wright directed the romantic zombie comedy, or “romzomcom,” which starred Pegg and Frost as a couple of slackers trying to deal with the zombie apocalypse.

Scott Beale / Laughing SquidShaun of the Dead is an homage to the works of George Romero and Sam Raimi, wrapped around a gooey center of wacky-yet-deadpan British comedy. Though it’s a ridiculous parody at heart, it shows a realistic scenario in which ordinary people attempt to deal, practically, with a totally unrealistic and impractical situation. American and British audiences were united in their love of this instant cult classic.

Gladiator: Oh Yeah. He Was Maximus.

Did anyone not like Gladiator? It’s a monster epic filled with swords and strategy and political skulduggery and Russell Crowe beating down a whole bunch of Roman types and romance and a whole lot more in there, but frankly, that’s reason enough all by itself.

V For Vendetta: Remember, Remember

Remember, remember the fifth of November. The gunpowder treason and plot. I see no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

A whole row of Guy Fawkes masks.

It’s the rhyme of Guy Fawkes day, and a line for the socio-anarchists out there. V For Vendetta, meanwhile, is a movie for the socio-anarchists and comic book fans out there.

Back to the Future: We Don’t Need…Roads

If you went back in time and killed your own grandfather, what would happen?

Back to the FutureThis so-called “grandfather paradox” has baffled time travel enthusiasts for decades. Going into the past and negating your own existence seems impossible, but in 1985, Marty McFly nearly managed to. By going back in time and preventing his parents from falling in love, Marty puts himself in danger of disappearing…unless he can find a way to make it right.

Back to the Future was a surprise hit, spawning two sequels and becoming a cultural phenomenon all its own. People still recognize the characters and catch-phrases from Back to the Future; Christopher Lloyd even starred as Doc Brown in a series of DirecTV commercials last year.

I Am the Knight: Batman Begins (Again)

Batman has been on the silver screen more than many other, equally popular superheroes. Is it his dark mystique? His ambiguous morality? His rubber fetish suit? Whatever the reason, with Batman Begins, the dark knight was introduced to a whole new generation of fans.

Batman When it comes to live action, Batman is a tough nut to crack. The mixture of the ridiculous (giant man-bat vs. a guy who dresses like Matthew Lesko), and the upsetting (parents gunned down in an alley), doesn’t always translate. Batman Begins is about as dark and gritty as a superhero movie can be, choosing to forgo the inherent silliness of adaptations like Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, or, God forbid, the reviled Batman & Robin. Sure, he’s a guy dressed like a bat. Sure, one of his arch-enemies wears a question-mark suit, and the other is a permanent clown. But that doesn’t mean he can’t kick some serious butt.
