The Frat Pack: Frank Sinatra Is Spinning in His Grave.

They call them the “Frat Pack”–a clear and well-reasoned spin on Frank Sinatra’s “Rat Pack”–and they’re the loose coterie of actors and friends that regularly show up in each others’ movies. They include comic icons-in-the-making like Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, the Wilson brothers Owen and Luke, Steve Carell, Vince Vaughn and Jack Black.

Vince and Owen Possibly in Mid Karaoke-JamThough they were dubbed the “Frat Pack” by USA Today following Ferrell’s “Old School” performance in the movie of the same name, originally they were referred to as the “Slacker Pack” on the pages of Entertainment Weekly. Which was sort of a misnomer–within the space of one year, they had six movies between them. Going back even as far as 1996 to Stiller, Black and Wilson’s run in “The Cable Guy”, this slightly-less-than-magnificent six managed to appear in just shy of twenty movies together. Not just any movies, either, but relatively big pictures like Meet the Parents and Starsky and Hutch.

No 007 till 008, But That’s Okay With Me

The marketing for a 2007 James Bond film practically writes itself. Despite this, filmmakers decided to take their time and plan for a 2008 release. The script was finished a scant week before the writer’s strike, and everything is proceeding as planned. Come in, 007.

James BondBond 22’s title has not yet been released, but we know that it picks up right where Casino Royale left off. Bond will begin his mission of revenge after the tragic events that closed the last film, and we will see him evolve into the “blunt instrument” we know and love.

Can’t Stop the Signal: Joss Whedon’s Serenity

In the long line of FOX network’s unjustly canceled shows, you will find Joss Whedon’s eleven-episode sci-fi series Firefly. The creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin off Angel, which ran for seven and five seasons respectively, never expected to be thrown off the air so quickly. Outraged fans voted with their wallets: DVD sales of Firefly blew everyone away, including executives at Universal Pictures who eagerly bought Whedon’s Firefly-based script. The original cast reunited, and fans were once again delighted with Whedon’s unique brand of humor and drama.

Serenity Serenity was a rare breed. Short-running TV shows are almost never given spin off films, and if they are, such films are rarely successful. Serenity grossed $25 million in U.S. theaters and $9 million in DVD sales. Though it resolved a plot that was first developed on the show, film goers unfamiliar with Firefly were still able to follow the storyline - writers, supervised by Whedon, provided back story that had not previously been revealed. Existing fans and new recruits were equally enthralled.

The Godfather: Capo di Tutti di Capi

Yeah, I know. Just sit there for a second and let the sheer force of it roll over you. This sucker has been around since 1972, and I defy anyone to tell me it’s dated. Thirty five years, folks. Thirty five years and it’s still as powerful and as sweeping and as purely epic as it was when it came out. Within most of our lifetimes there will be a Golden Anniversary of The Godfather and this is an awe-inspiring thought.

All I Want Is Great Content!

When we first started working on Kwanzoo, we visited a whole lot of trivia sites out there. We still do. There are some good ones, to be sure. But the better ones we’ve seen do not allow users to submit content into their trivia game. And the ones that do allow user-submitted content have at least some of the following issues:

Give me 10 questions on 1 topic. Or don’t give me any questions at all!
