Movie Trivia: Buffy Star Goes For the Possession

So, let’s face facts for a second… Sarah Michelle Gellar’s career, post-Buffy the Vampire Slayer, hasn’t been what you’d call fantastic. Scooby-Doo is considered a war crime in certain countries–not without good reason–and it could be said that her attempt to action-hero her way through The Grudge pretty much destroyed everything that was scary about Ju-On and thus should have been scary about The Grudge.

After The Grudge fell through the floor, there wasn’t a whole lot heard from Sarah Michelle Gellar–she had some movies but most went direct to video, and of course there’s her standing gig on Robot Chicken, but now she’s got a new movie coming out that just might put some punch in her career.

T.V. Trivia: Sex and Sopranos, or - When HBO Was King

Back in the days of Sex and the City and The Sopranos, HBO was the king of TV. At least, that’s what Stuart Levine of MSNBC claims. It’s not hard to believe; Sex is one of the most talked-about shows of the past decade, while The Sopranos has a user rating of 9.5 stars on IMDB. But now, HBO’s hemorrhaging viewers, and everyone wants to know why.

This March, head of programming Carolyn Strauss was let go, having been blamed for the recent drop in ratings. But, as with most things, the reasons behind falling viewership are many and varied. And they’re probably not anyone’s fault.

T.V. Trivia: The Bad Girls of T.V., According to MSNBC

Everyone loves a femme fatale. And Marc Hirsh of MSNBC has put together a mostly-random list of “Our favorite TV bad girls,” though you have to give him credit for not giving it some kind of superlative title like “BEST EVER.”

While classic villianesses like Amanda of Melrose Place are present, some of the ladies he’s honored with the distinction seem a little out of place.

T.V. Trivia: Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Makes Comeback! …Sort Of.

There are some out there who regard me as something of a stoic figure, lacking in sentimentality, and they’re quite right. But I, much like the rest of you, was greatly saddened by the screwing by the network Mystery Science Theatre 3000 received. Between the shafting they got on Comedy Central, and the subsequent shafting they took from the Sci-Fi channel, it’s a wonder they can still walk.

But you can’t keep a good comic down, no matter how hard two separate networks can try, and thus, Mystery Science Theatre 3000 makes a comeback. Sort of.

T.V. Trivia–What The Hell Is “Queercore”, Anyway?

Okay, before everybody jumps down my throat all at once for actually using the word “queer” in an article, restrain yourselves and go have a look at this.

Michael Cera, whom you’ll remember from Juno and Arrested Development and Superbad because he played very nearly the same character in all three, will be back for more typecasting fun in “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” which features the following as a plot synopsis: [Read more →]

T.V. Trivia–Sarah Michelle Parker On Her Knees at Smithsonian

I know–provocative headline, no? Well, before you start thinking the Sex and the City star was up to no good, think again. Turns out she was on her knees…begging the Smithsonian curators to let her borrow the desk and laptop made famous–allegedly–by her character Carrie on, what else, Sex and the City.

One, I’m royally pissed off thinking that my tax dollars are going to preserve CARRIE’S DESK. When I think of all the things the Smithsonian could–should!–be preserving, some cheap trollop’s desk is not high on the list. Two, what’s the point? By now that laptop is so horribly out of date it’s not even funny. Just get a new laptop, already. Your entire audience has.

T.V. Trivia–Buffy Alum Amber Benson Carries on the Horror Route

I’m personally very fond of Amber Benson, one of the lesser-known additions to the Buffy The Vampire Slayer cast. Not only was she Tara on the show, but she’s also got a pretty extensive indie horror career going on, as well as some lighter indie fare, including a little movie called Chance.

I loved Chance. I’m not normally one for romantic comedies, but when it’s Amber Benson at the helm, getting her shooting budget by selling autographed Tara action figures, you know it’s going to be some sweet stuff.

T.V. Trivia: Fox Announces 3 New Pilots with Familiar Faces

The time has come, the networks said, to talk of many things - of shoes, and ships, and sealing wax, and what’s going to be on your T.V.s next fall.

As much as I’d like to express this entire article in poetry, I think I’ll switch to prose. Just days away from spilling its full lineup for next season, Fox has let slip a few crucial details of pilots that will be picked up for next summer. ABC, too, has released a few official go-aheads.

Boston Legal
fans can relax. The fifth season has been approved, and we can all continue to watch James Spader increase in puffiness until he actually surpasses William Shatner and/or his face explodes like a grilled sausage. As for new pilots and renewals of recent shows, nobody’s quite sure what will be decided. Stay tuned.

Fox has some big plans for next season. A J.J. Abrams pilot - yes, the man behind Lost, Alias, and Cloverfield - will soon grace our screens. Called “Fringe,” it’s about the FBI (surprise!) and apparently deals with paranormal activity. Hmmm… “Sit Down, Shut Up,” from Arrested Development’s Mitch Hurwitz, plans to capitalize on the increasing popularity of animation for grown-ups, while a Jason Bateman-directed pilot, “The Inn,” stars Jerry O’Connell - widely accepted as the poor man’s Bateman. Arrested Development writer Abraham Higginbotham (yes, really) is the creator.

T.V. Trivia: WGA Strike Still Hurting T.V.

Just because the writers are hard at work after the industry-stopping WGA strike, doesn’t mean that everything is back to normal in the world of television. The latest numbers from Neilsen indicate that viewership of the four major networks, ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, was down 9% from this period last year.

Can you blame the strike for this? Alan Wurtzel of NBC isn’t ready to commit to once explanation: “The strike had a number of impacts, but as with everything it’s never very clear or direct or black and white.”
