Ebert & Roeper Leave “Ebert & Roeper”…Wait, I’m Confused

Did you know that the show “At the Movies with Ebert & Roeper” is owned by Disney? Well, I didn’t. But apparently, Disney has decided that they want to “take the show in a new direction.”

One that doesn’t involve Ebert. Or Roeper.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Act III

After much thought, I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t talk about Act III without spoiling it. To summarize it up until the end would be pointless and boring; it’s fifteen minutes of your life. Just watch it.

From here on out, Act III will be spoiled. Continue at your own peril.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Act II

The second episode of Joss Whedon’s experimental new media musical, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, picks up right where Act I left off. And that’s the luxury of an episodic internet project - no “previously on”s, no summaries of things you’ve already seen. Because you can watch the first episode whenever you want. Thanks, internet!

Captain Hammer and Penny go on a “date” at her beloved homeless shelter, where he is clearly uncomfortable and out of his element. Though he puts on a brave face, it’s obvious that the homeless don’t matter to him - at least, not as much as one-upping his nemesis, the titular Dr. Horrible.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Act I

Back when Firefly was all the rage, ThinkGeek used to sell shirts that said, “JOSS WHEDON IS MY MASTER NOW.” They eventually went on clearance and disappeared - much like the man himself, after the cancellation. He popped briefly back into public view to make Serenity, then to announce the Buffy comic, then was gone again…until now.

And the blogosphere is buzzing with news of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. (I’ve progressed to using the word “blogosphere” without a hint of irony. The transformation is now complete.) I think we all feel the massive responsibility of watching, reviewing, and loving this project - it is low-budget, charming, and most of all, gauranteed to go unnoticed by traditional media. It’s our job to talk about it, because no one else will.

Exclusive Interview: David Denman of “The Office”

First things first, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to talk to us. You’ve appeared in an impressive array of projects, from The X-Files to Smart People and, of course, The Office. Next week, your new film Take will be released in theaters, co-starring Minnie Driver and Jeremy Renner.

Let’s begin with The Office, since it’s one of your more prominent roles. How did you end up on the show? Was Roy originally intended to be a one-shot character, or did you know that you were signing up for an important recurring role?

Overlooked DVD: Woody Allen’s “Cassandra’s Dream”

A few months ago, Woody Allen’s latest film Cassandra’s Dream was released on DVD. Few people noticed; I remember reading about it on a blog earlier this year, but no one seemed to care much. Woody Allen, despite his name recognition, doesn’t get a lot of box office love.

And it’s a shame, because Cassandra’s Dream is well worth watching.

T.V.’s Best Breakup Songs

Breaking up sucks. But if there’s one thing that can make it better, it’s huddling in your room under a blanket listening to the same depressing song over and over again. But first, you’ve got to pick the right song. How? Well, your favorite T.V shows can help.

Here, I have attempted to compile some of the most heartbreaking songs that have been featured on T.V. They don’t have to be about a breakup or even featured during a breakup plot; if they’re depressing and lonely, they definitely qualify.

Does T.V. Make You Feel Ugly?

These days, television is blamed for many evils. Most of them are related to self-esteem and body image issues that plague our culture, and are beginning to spread to those who consume our media.

It has been theorized that thin is beautiful simply because the camera adds ten pounds. “Regular” people are expected to conform to unrealistic standards, suitable for the unforgiving lens when they’ll never appear before it except in home videos.

There is almost no doubt that television has contributed to the rise in eating disorders and emotional disturbances. But can it be entirely blamed?

HBO’s “Bored to Death”: Because We Need More Stories About Writers

Writers love to write about writers. It’s a well-known fact. They get the chance to portray themselves as they want to be seen - tormented, brilliant, flawed, but lovable. Even when writers are despicable people, they’re always fascinating. Writers in real life work without an audience, so they love the idea of people watching them, fascinated by their lives.

I can’t be the only writer who is sick of watching stuff about writers. It’s one thing when you take a show like 30 Rock, which is all about the production of a sketch comedy program, and have a writer as the star. It’s quite another when characters are writers for no particular reason - except, of course, to show off the dark but brilliant lifestyle of A Writer.

Sometimes, You Either Have to Laugh or Go Insane, Part Two

Everybody remember the unpleasantness that the youngest Hogan, Nick, landed himself in not so long ago, landing himself in jail and his best friend in a coma?  Drag racing while hammered has a way of doing that sort of thing, but anyway–it didn’t take long for Nick to start talking about his new “realality” show on VH1, possibly titled “The New Nick” or something similar.  In fact, I’m not going to let that die.  Just to continually remind everybody what kind of egocentric nitwits we’re dealing with, I’m gonna use the word “realality” for the rest of the article.

Most people were, understandably, outraged.  We’d put up with enough crap in the form of Hogan Knows Best, or as my good friend Rob described it, a show that managed to jump the shark and MISS.  The last thing we needed was another realality show featuring the liquored-up little moron who almost killed a United States serviceman because he had to get hammered BEFORE speeding.  Oh, that and he was in jail for almost killing a guy–it wasn’t exactly the time to start thinking realality show.
