Castlevania roundup: Judgement and Order of Ecclesia

So, that Castlevania fighting game is out. Somehow they managed to take a series known for its questionable writing and poor translation (”Wait a moment, you seem human and yet… What do you here?”), transplanted it into a genre famous for awful dialog and translation (”Victoly!”), and somehow the result is even worse than you would expect. That takes some talent.

The video game sales rundown

It’s the worst nightmare of the games journalist: Everything is out already. There’s nothing left to overhype!

I guess now the only thing left to do is see which game is winning in sales. Or you could play them, but where’s the fun in that? Let’s go to the charts.

Xbox 360 gains ground on PS3 in Japan, both still getting crushed by Nintendo.

It seems demand has spiked for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in Japan. Tales of Vesperia triggered a sell-out of the console that once languished on Japanese shelves, and even the latest sales charts show it edged out the PS3 on weekly sales, 7,893 to 7,559.

That looks great until you notice that Nintendo is basically stomping on everyone’s fingers while Sony and Microsoft fight on the ground for table scraps. The Wii sold 27,050 units, and on the handheld side, the DS sold 44,282 units while Sony’s PSP only sold 25,001.

Mercury Meltdown: Revolution Review

Mercury Meltdown: Revolution CoverMercury Meltdown: Revolution is a puzzle game for the Wii based on the original Archer Maclean’s Mercury for the PSP. The game is very unique as the player tilts the entire level to move the blob of mercury to the finish. The motion controls of the Wii-mote work beautifully with this game and are very intuitive.

The graphics of the game are bit lacking, but it is a puzzle game after all. The camera can make it incredible hard to see all the pieces of mercury at one time, and will frequently focus on the piece you don’t want it to. [Read more →]

Cave Story coming to WiiWare. Hell yes.

The announcement came down yesterday, buried in an otherwise pedestrian press release. Cave Story is coming to the Wii. This is great news.

Cave Story is a side-scroller that has been around on the PC since 2004. The game is a labor of love by one Japanese guy who goes by the alias Pixel. It took him five years to complete, working alone. It’s free and anyone can download it. For many people, it was an introduction to the idea that indie games can be as good as or better than commercial ones.

Wonderfully horrible Mega Man 9 box to be sold to public.

The original Mega Man games back in the ’80s were notorious for having horrible box art, so when Capcom started promoting the retro-styled Mega Man 9, they mocked up a t-shirt with deliberately ugly package art.

Now, Mega Man 9 is a downloadable game for the Wii, so it wasn’t supposed to have a box at all. However, the design went over so well with the video game nostalgianauts that Capcom actually made boxes for the press, and they’ve announced that they’re going probably going to be selling ~200 limited edition boxes of the game to consumers.

Tactile feedback in video game controllers: A lost art.

Back in 1991, Nintendo introduced the SNES to the American market. With it came a new controller with twice as many face buttons. How could they keep the player’s thumb from getting “lost” in the four buttons? The user shouldn’t have to take his eyes off the screen, after all.

The solution was simple but elegant: Two of the buttons had a concave surface while the other two had a convex surface. It’s a small thing, but it was brilliant from a human interface perspective. It’s also something that modern console manufacturers have completely dropped in their new models.

Wii Fit Phenom

Wii Fit BagIt is my belief that the recent trend of exercise games is a step in the right direction for getting gamers healthy. With that being said, the amount of Wii Fit related accessories is ridiculous. I walked into a Best Buy last week and saw an entire isle dedicated to Wii Fit merchandise. Who really needs sweat bands and a water bottle for playing wii fit? If you sweat playing Wii Fit….well, I’m not going to comment on that. [Read more →]
