I took me a long time to get around to seeing Saw. It didn’t really interest me; maybe because of all the hype, or maybe because it seemed too much like a Hostel-style gorefest without any actual redeeming qualities.

Much to my surprise, when I finally saw (lol!) the movies, I liked them. I liked them a lot. Jigsaw is a very effective character, his victims seem to deserve it, but you can’t help but put yourself in their shoes. “Well, I would have found the path through the barbed wire.” “I would have stayed in the chair instead of jumping up and panicking.” “I would have put my arms around my head so that the spikes wouldn’t go through to my brain.” We all think we know the secret to surviving.

Are they deeply flawed? Yes. Are they even scary? Not really. But they are what they are, and what they are is fun.

Now, Saw fans find themselves faced with the conundrum of figuring out what, exactly, Saw V will be about. Saw IV successfully circumvented everyone’s expectations, refusing to pick up the cliffhanger from the last film until the VERY LAST SECONDS (and even then, not completely resolving the story). For this reason and others, it’s dangerous to speculate. But I will anyway.

Here is what we know about Saw V.

1. We WILL find out what’s happened to Jeff’s daughter. Finally. (Hey Steve, didn’t we have a running bet about this? And doesn’t this mean…I win?)

2. David Hackl, not Darren Bousman, will be directing.

3. Julie Benz, of Angel and Dexter fame, is appearing in the film.

4. The lawsuit between Carey Elwes and the producers is over. It is possible that he will appear in the franchise someday, but there’s no definitive news.

5. It is not known if we will find out the contents of the envelope that made Amanda cry.

6. It is not known is Obi’s significance to Jigsaw will be revealed.

7. Tobin Bell will be appearing in the film.

It’s not much, but it’s something. What do you think Saw V will be about?
