School of Rock Goes For Extra Credit

Hey, remember when Liz was talking about that movie “The Rocker”?  You know, how she went out of her way to make real clear that it had NOTHING to do with the Jack Black vehicle “School of Rock”?  How she said that if you take “School of Rock”, substitute this with that and that with this and thus and such, you get “The Rocker”?

Well…um…she was right.  Sort of.  “The Rocker”  has nothing to do with “School of Rock”.  It doesn’t have to.  There’s already going to be a sequel.

Titled “School of Rock 2: America Rocks”, Jack Black will be reprising his role as Dewey Finn, slacker-turned-mentor for precocious, uptight children who need some rawk in their lives.  Okay, sure, I liked the first School of Rock.  But mostly because I liked the progression Jack Black put into Dewey Finn, taking him from going-nowhere rocker Finn to faux-Schneebly and straight onto responsible rocker Dewey.  But now that we’re starting from the top with Dewey, I can’t imagine where the conflict and dramatic tension are going to come from.

This makes me somewhat disappointed from the outset–sure, I haven’t seen a synopsis or anything yet.  This is an announcement in the very earliest stages.  But I’m having a tough time imagining where they can possibly take this to make a good movie out of it.  Or at least not just more of the same.

And to keep yourself grounded in the original, RAISE YOUR GOBLET OF RAWK and play the School of Rock trivia on Kwanzoo.
