Scorcese Strolls Onto “Boardwalk Empire”

Let me first admit that I am not the most consistent fan of Martin Scorsese’s work. I really enjoyed a lot of what he did with Cape Fear, and The Departed was very engrossing, but I won’t stake my reputation on him being a “great” filmmaker.” I think there are plenty of directors who are at least as good, and many who have a more unique voice and whose films I find more interesting and enjoyable. In fact, I can honestly say that my favorite Scorsese work to date is his movie theater cell phone PSA:

Oh, Martin.

That said - he’s still a filmmaking legend, and his films have been highly influential to the world culture. I’m glad he finally got his due with that Oscar, and I hope he sticks around for a while.

As it happens, he’s about to ply his trade on a T.V. show episode - something he hasn’t done in twenty-two years. The new HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” is trying to score him to helm their pilot episode. Not bad! (Apparently, he’s already executive producer on the show. That should be a pretty convincing argument - “hey, Martin, you should direct an episode of this show that you own!”)

Based on the novel of the same name, “Boardwalk Empire” is all about the rise of gamling and corruption in Atlantic City in the ’20s. Sounds like it’s right up Martin’s alley.

I’m not quite ready to shell about the subscription price for HBO, but maybe if they add a few more awesome-sounding shows. (YOU HEAR THAT, HBO? PLY ME WITH QUALITY PROGRAMMING!)
