Smart People Got No Reason to Live

I think I started to feel old when I realized that up-and-coming actresses like Ellen Page were born in 1987.

Smart People - Miramax PicturesI was born in 1987.

Arguably, I may not be as successful as Ellen Page at this point in my career. She’s already made millions by playing underage girls, whereas people have been calling me “ma’am” since I was ten. I’m a blogger, and she’s starring in the Sundance hit Smart People.

All right, maybe she’s not exactly “starring,” given that she plays the main character’s daughter and is part of the movie’s subplot. But anything featuring Ellen these days is obviously a vehicle for her smart, sassy attitude. Early reviews report that the relationship between Ellen and Thomas Haden Church has far more chemistry and interest than the main one, which features Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Horseface. Parker. Sarah Jessica Parker, sorry.

Smart People is the story of a college professor (Quaid) who, after a head injury that leaves him unable to drive, must rely on his very unreliable brother (Church). The brother introduces Quaid’s straight-laced daughter (Ellen, of course) to his lifestyle and a “complicated” relationship ensues. Meanwhile, Quaid falls for Parker, a former student.

Luckily, the presence of little Ellen ensured that Smart People found distribution and secured the release date of April 11th. Until then, enjoy the trailer and worship at the altar of Ellen Page. You know you want to. We all do.
