Some are less than happy about Diablo III’s looks
So, there’s a petition up protesting the art direction of Diablo III. People are complaining it’s not dark enough and looks too much like World of Warcraft.
A few points:
- As someone who has played a whole heck of a lot of of World of Warcraft, I don’t see the resemblance. The last Diablo installment was eight years ago. The characters were pixelated shots of pretty fugly 3d models. I think this is a pretty faithful take on that fairly vauge heritage. Even if it were skewed to WoW, which I don’t think it is, that would be fine by me. World of Warcraft is the industry standard for appealing low-poly art that still runs well on older computers.
- I’ve been churning through Diablo II ever since the third one got announced. There’s a fair amount of action in nighttime or underground, sure. But there’s also plenty of levels that happen in bright, well-lit places, like the middle of a desert. Besides, if you’re complaining that it’s not as dark as Diablo II, then you’re old enough to remember the miserable days when every game took place in brown and green sewers with a lava level thrown in. It sucked. Do you really want to take us back to that era?
- I understand these are early levels. The context is, the world has been peaceful since the last game, but now things are starting to hit the fan. There will be more blood and pentagrams in later levels, if that’s your bag.

I saw those trailers too, and I’m not exactly satisfied myself. Of course, I got kind of bored with Diablo 2’s somewhat repetitive nature by the time I got to the swamp docks, so I don’t know how much of the problem is “i Don’t Like The Art” as opposed to “I’m Not That Fond of the Game”.
