Some notes on the E3 coverage

- Jeremy Parish of 1up.com is one of the best video game columnists out there. During his trip to E3, he noticed Valkyria Chronicles, a game he wasn’t actually assigned to cover.

I already loved its art style, but now that I’ve played the game I realize it’s the world’s most perfect combination of tactical strategy, third-person action, Nausicaa and unadulterated wonderfulness. Seriously, it’s good, and the presence of Skies of Arcadia ’s Aika as a playable character pretty much sealed the deal.

Of course, you already knew most of that, because I told you last month. I scooped Jeremy Parish! I can now retire happy.

- While watching the video of the Resident Evil 5 co-op feature, I noticed something odd. As one of the zombies was shot in the shoulder, he grabbed twisted away and grabbed at his wounded arm, turned back towards the player, and stood up again. That’s not weird by itself, except that the animation is lifted directly from Resident Evil 4. In fact, almost all of the enemy animations look like they’re from the previous game. Now, a copy of RE4 is still a copy of one of the greatest action games of all time, but still.

- Is this the greatest quote of E3?

A quick digression. The PR manager and I had the following conversation on quick kills:

“In a stealth game, it’s always important to have a lot of different quick kills so you don’t get tired of seeing the same ones. We have like fifty different kill animations.”

“Do you –“

“—My favorite is the balls.”

“…”

“…”

“…You kill people with your ball—“

“You stab zem in the balls.”

I looked over to the producer, who was nodding in agreement.

“It’s great,” he said, before forcefully stabbing an imaginary crotch in the air, his face contorted in violent jubilation.

The evidence points to yes.
