When my sister-in-law (to-be) claimed that Shia LaBeouf’s name meant “king of the beef,” I just had to look it up. I knew that “la beouf” was the beef in French, but Shia didn’t have any meaning I was familiar with. Luckily, we have the internet now, so I didn’t have to write into Walter Scott’s Personality Parade to have my question answered.

Turns out that Shia means “child of God.” Granted, “child of God of the beef” isn’t quite as catchy, but it’s a bit less ridiculous.

So how did Shia find himself saddled with such a moniker? He is half Jewish and half Cajun, thus the Hebrew/French hybrid. And his face is almost as unique as his name. With curly hair a cuddly demeanor, he’s made the rounds as that “kid next door” character, from Holes to Constantine. Despite the inability of almost everyone to spell his name correctly on the first try, critics speculate that he may become an A-list star before long.

Recently, in Disturbia, he played a much deeper dramatic role than ever before. This was followed by a popular performance in the blockbuster Transformers, which secured him a contract for the sequel.

But Shia’s biggest upcoming role is in the newest Indiana Jones, subtitled Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Only a few promotional pictures have been released, but fans are excited (and perplexed by some of the modern-looking costumes).
