State of the SEC (East)
1. Florida (11-1, 7-1 SEC) will square off against Alabama this weekend in the conference title game and the winner will likely be the No. 1 contender for the BCS title. The Gators only loss came to second-ranked Mississippi in the West division of the Southeastern Conference. Stay tuned for a preview of the big showdown later in the week.
2. Georgia (9-3, 7-1) was ranked No. 1 in the AP poll in the preseason but failed to beat the top two SEC teams (Alabama and Florida) and couldn’t get the job done against intrastate rival Georgia Tech in its season finale. The Bulldogs will play in a bowl game, however, it will not be a BCS game.
3. South Carolina (7-5, 4-4) struggled against ranked teams this season and in all five of its losses its opposition was either ranked at the time or throughout some point during the season. With seven wins, the Gamecocks will surely be selected for a bowl game over their lower counterpoints.
4. Vanderbilt (6-6, 4-4) started off the season a perfect 5-0 but fell apart late in the season to finish with an even record. It may make go bowling since eligible, but it would seem likely that other teams would have a higher preference by officials.
5. Kentucky (6-6, 2-6) started off the season going 4-0 but failed miserably in conference games. I can’t support them going to be a bowl game over others, but maybe someone else will.
6. Tennessee (5-7, 3-5) dropped two of their first six games and failed to impress anyone throughout the regular season. The Volunteers just hired ex-Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin to solve their problems, hopefully their solution fairs better than Al Davis’.
