Staying In For Halloween? Cheer Up! Fun Abounds Thanks To The Interwebs
Okay, if you’re staying in for Halloween, chances are you’re feeling pretty bad about things right now. Maybe you’re bemoaning your lack of a social life, or that for some reason all the big events were LAST weekend because nobody saw a weekend Halloween coming. Maybe all your old friends moved away and got married and you don’t want to be the fifth wheel. But you know what? For once, that’s okay, because there’s an unsettlingly large amount of stuff to do, and I’m going to walk you through it.
So assuming you haven’t already ordered a large pizza and settled in for the night with an armload of horror DVDs, I’m going to give you some things to do with a homebound Halloween that won’t get you killed by random Satanists out looking for human sacrifices tonight.
1. The Chiller Dare To Direct video room
If you haven’t been here yet–or haven’t been here at all–the video submissions for Chiller’s Dare 2 Direct 2 contest have been OFF THE CHARTS with people getting short films together. As of this very moment there are two hundred and sixty short films in there (three pages of eighty, one page of twenty) and by the time you actually READ this there might well be more. You could be up all night watching all of these, and they’re not in any video store. As a network, Chiller may be utterly useless to true horror buffs, but the website sure has a lot of nifty packed into it. Side bonus? That’s the SECOND contest. There was a whole FIRST contest whose videos are also there.
Right now, YouTube has a guest editor–Wes “Nerve Gas” Craven. And although “Nerve Gas” Craven has all the subtlety of an open drum of Sarin, he’s got a selection of horror videos up that are actually kind of fun. Better yet, the search function is still available, and perfect for a drinking game. Try search terms like “scary”, “weird”, or “horror”. And don’t forget, sometimes the most horrifying stuff ACTUALLY HAPPENED.
A brief plug for Kwanzoo here–you realize there’s over TWO THOUSAND horror movie trivia questions, plus a panoply of questions about horror movie staple actors and directors like Robert Englund and John Carpenter?
4. Horror gaming–browser style!
Places like Newgrounds, Kongregate and Armor Games offer a wide array of horror-themed gaming, featuring some great stuff like Armor’s zombie-blasting fun “The Last Stand 2″. Be sure to swing by scenic Fort Tran and get hands on the Minimi rifle and the RPG for lots of high-caliber aggression-blasting fun.
5. Beat the rush–find a creepy date for New Years.
Okay, see…the fun thing about being a horror movie buff is that the fun doesn’t stop on November 1st. Indeed, horror movie season proper runs from about October to April, because as any horror buff will tell you, cold and dark is perfect horror movie viewing conditions. And ask anyone in the Northern Hemisphere–October to April is prime territory for cold and / or dark.
So you’ve got plenty of time to go a-huntin’ someone else who enjoys horror movies right along side you, and I tell you from practical experience, horror movies are great alone, but even better in groups.
