Still More Crazy–Romero’s Crazies Getting A Remake?

Kinda like 28 Days Later, except thirty years old, give or take.Let’s all pause for a moment in silent appreciation of George Romero’s work. There was a lot to like in there, and not all of it zombie related. There was his modern-day vampire flick, Martin. How about his monkey movie, Monkey Shines? Or the movie about the…guy with no face…called Bruiser? Okay, let’s just forget about Bruiser.

A movie of his not too many people remember, however, is The Crazies, a very Romero zombie-style movie involving a virus that drove people insane. Looking back on it now, I find myself wondering if he could sue the guys who did 28 Days Later.

But I digress. It was a great movie–if you can find it, I recommend it–but the interesting part is that it’s up for a remake.

This is good news to me. I’ve seen The Crazies a couple times, and its biggest flaw is that it looks so dated. If you can even find it, you’ll likely have plenty of audio issues in the playback, skips and stutters in the video playback from overuse, and everything like that. Assuming, as I said, that you can even find a copy in the first place–to my surprise you can actually find a copy on Netflix, but you’re in line after me, kids. I just put it in my queue.

A remake, assuming that it sticks to the source material, might well be a good idea. Give a new generation a chance to connect with Romero work. The problem of course is that Romero movie remakes are often a crap shoot. The Night of the Living Dead 1990 remake was excellent, mostly because it stuck very close (with some digressions) to the source material. Meanwhile, the Dawn of the Dead remake from Zack “300” Snyder was a pile of wet garbage because if it weren’t for the mall and the zombies, you’d be convinced you were watching a totally different movie.

Thus, I hold my breath, hoping for the best and expecting the worst, and in the meantime, I amuse myself with George Romero trivia on Kwanzoo.
