Summer T.V on DVD: Thoughts on the “Lost” Pilot
Well, summer is coming to a close. A lot of your favorite shows will be starting up again in just a week or two, mercifully. The dead time is over! And me? I’m just trying to catch up on all the years of T.V. that I missed.
I grew up mostly without cable, and I just got used to not watching T.V. I’d get ahold of shows online or on DVD when I could, but for the most part, I didn’t participate in that great uniting factor that brings us all together to argue about the things we love.
Television.
Well, that’s about to change. I’m getting DirecTV next week, and I’m going to start following T.V. in a big way. Luckily for me, the writer’s strike put off a lot of new shows until January - 24, Dollhouse, and Lost all come to mind - so I have plenty of time to catch up on old seasons before I need to start figuring out what the hell is going on.
Lost is first on my checklist. Remember the Lost pilot? The one you watched four years ago? I’m just getting to it now, for the very first time. Kinda sad, I know. I don’t have a lot of excuses, but at least I’m watching it!
The pilot was aired in two parts, each an hour long - forty-two minutes without commercials. And that is plenty of time to get a viewer hooked. I thought some of you Lost fans might enjoy reading the musings of a newbie - and you newbies might be encouraged to jump in.
Right away, the show draws you in. It’s hard not to imagine yourself in the situation presented: a plane crash, a mysterious island, a menacing monster. Mystery upon mystery.
Knowing that the whole Kate/Sawyer thing became such a big deal later in the series, it’s strange that they seem to be building towards a romance between Jack and Kate. Of course, as soon as Kate and Sawyer encounter each other, it’s obvious they’re going for a Han/Leia thing.
Here’s one thing the makers of Lost know how to do: set up suspense. While I know a lot of it probably won’t pay off, I’m hooked anyway.
At least I don’t have to wait a week for the next episode.
