The Disappearance of Split-screen Co-op

Splinter Cell Co-opIt seems more and more games today are abandoning split-screen co-op for online co-op only. While I fully support online co-op and the ability to play with your friends no matter where they live, I’d like to play against the people that I see every day. I’d like human contact with the people I spend time with instead of telling them to go all the way to their house so we can play the same game together. Am I going to need another Xbox 360 to play co-op with people in my own house?

New games such as Too Human and Mercenaries 2 lack split-screen co-op or multiplayer. I can only hope that the Fable 2 co-op will bring games out of this co-op dry spell by having both online and offline co-op.

The best game as far as the online and offline functionality goes has to be Halo 3. The game can be played co-operatively online and offline through the entire story. Also, the game has split-screen multiplayer for online play, such that four players in the same room can go up against other players in online multiplayer matches.

I am just waiting for more companies to realize that the experience of getting together with friends to play games will sell games.

Sadly lads, we are of a dying generation. It seems (from my limited perspective) that only those of us who are in the real world truly grasp the wonderful nature that is an armchair splitscreen deathmatch. Kids today don’t seem to all cram into a living room to play Goldeneye or Konker anymore. Simply put, when you’re young online multiplayer is just the best there is, that is until you become an adult and start losing precious time from your day thanks to work, kids, and the whole shabang.
