Here’s one for the Bucking the Trend department, and man, is it ever a doozy. You know that movie The Eye? The one remade from a Pang Brothers movie (I still think “Oxide” is an unnecessarily goofy name) and starring Jessica Alba? Well, it took number one at the box office recently–not that the competition was any great shakes, it beat Rambo and Meet the Spartans. That’s like beating a chimp with no thumbs at croquet.

But the part that’ll get you is, the writers and directors have absolutely zero interest in doing a sequel. In fact, they’re planning their next movie already!

Which Is Just A Remake, But Still.

Yeah, it’s true–after remaking The Eye, their plan is to go on and remake the 1950s classic THEM! THEM!, for those of you who weren’t paying much attention in your history classes, is a classic 1950s film about gigantic ants, possibly made huge by atomic radiation or Communists or maybe even little Jimmy’s refusal to say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning before school. If you ever saw any of those fifties movies you know they had some really outlandish explanations for the universe.

According to 1950’s logic, radioactivity was going to make our kids into atomic supermen capable of beating Communism singlehandedly before a nutritious lunch of peanut butter, lard, and Lucky Strikes made by loving moms everywhere, you could throw an impromptu sock hop in a room containing a giant spider (that actually happened in Earth Vs. The Spider. Not kidding.). that sort of thing.

But anyway–that takes some serious stones to buck the system like that. In an era where directors and actors alike are looking for the paycheck part, it gives you some hope that maybe, just maybe, the industry can turn itself around and remember that it’s all about the audience.

Well, probably not. But it’s fun to dream.
