The Lord of the Spiderwick Chronicles of Narnia

Just because we don’t have enough fantasy films based on children’s book series, this February will see the release of yet one more: The Spiderwick Chronicles. The books tell the tale of three siblings who, having moved to the mysterious Spiderwick estate, discover a secret world of fairies and goblins who are battling for possession of Narnia a powerful ring a field guide. Yeah, that’s it.

Since J.R.R. Tolkien defined modern fantasy with his Lord of the Rings trilogy, it’s hard to come up with something new. Will The Spiderwick Chronicles be charming? Sure. Will it be successful? Probably. But it will also be the same story we’ve seen a million times, with unlikely young heroes calling on their inner strength to defeat some magical villain(s), learning valuable lessons along the way. If there were a Fantasy Film Drinking Game, any players would be completely smashed by movie’s end. (If one of the children turns out to be The Chosen One, take a drink.)

Still, The Spiderwick Chronicles feeds our ever-growing hunger for family films. With R and PG-13 rated cinema becoming more and more popular, it can be hard to find a quality film for kids and adults to enjoy alike. While The Spiderwick Chronicles won’t be winning any awards, at least it’s something you can take the kids to - and that counts for a whole heck of a lot.
