The Man Who Couldn’t Die: Hooray for Santa Claus!
As all parents explain to their children at some point, Santa Claus is not alive. Not in the cuddly, bearded, bowlful-of-jelly sense. Old Saint Nick may have existed, and his legend may or may not have been changed drastically over the years, but his spirit of giving lives on in all of us. Unfortunately, we all lack his omnipresence and magic sleigh, which inevitably leads to last-minute mall runs where we have a decent chance of getting whacked upside of the head with a Nintendo Wii.
Leave it to Disney to take the metaphysical concept of Santa Claus’ spirit and make it frighteningly real. In that modern holiday classic The Santa Clause, Tim Allen accidentally kills Santa. It sounds dark for Disney, until you realize that almost all of their animated features showcase the death of a main character’s parent within the first half hour. At least this is only Santa, who, as far as we know, remains childless.
Rather than be charged for manslaughter, Tim Allen must instead literally accept the spirit of Santa - he must become the jolly old elf. Clearly, it’s all a very inspiring metaphor for how Santa, though he’s dead as a doornail in reality, can be personified in ourselves. Whether that makes Allen’s physical transformation any less creepy is debatable.
Whether or not you feel up to playing some The Santa Clause movie trivia, we at Kwanzoo would like to remind you that this is the season of joy and giving. You don’t have to grow a beard and become morbidly obese to play Santa to your friends and family - have a joyous holiday season, wherever you are!
