The Rush Hour Series: Wasted Exertion
Rush Hour and even Rush Hour 2 were those movies that really did things by halves. On the good half, they had Jackie Chan. Jackie Chan’s good in pretty much anything he does,
especially his older Chinese action flicks like Drunken Master. I loved Drunken Master. And on the bad half, we have the shrill and unpleasant Chris Tucker, a low-rent Chris Rock who seems to be genetically incapable of being anything less than annoying.
Jackie Chan—Always Right
The Rush Hour series was just one more bit of proof that Jackie Chan can serve well as a comic actor or a straight-out fighter, and often both at the same time. Versatility is the hallmark of Jackie Chan, and putting him in either Rush Hour may have been the smartest move the producers and such behind it ever made.
Chris Tucker—Always Wrong
I don’t know why this man is wasting all our time as an actor when he is clearly suited for a job as King of All Mosquitoes. Was there no one else available to do this? Did we have to get stuck with this second-rate castoff from The Fifth Element? Chris Tucker—stop acting. Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth? No, clearly not…you still have a career.
The Final Result: Halfway Decent
You just can’t stiffen a bucket full of spit with a handful of buckshot, folks, and that drops the entire concept of Rush Hour down a couple pegs. It’s no Lethal Weapon, but there are pluses enough to at least make it halfway passable.
Like Jackie Chan. Man’s A Genius.
