The “Saw” Franchise: the Jigsaw Gone Dull?

Well folks, the dust has long since settled on Halloween and our annual appointment with Jigsaw and Amanda and all those many cops out to settle their collective hash has come and gone. It’s not a big spoiler risk to say that our diabolic duo is currently cooling on a matched pair of slabs, so the onus was on Wan and Whannell–big time!–to find a way to keep the franchise going sans its two biggest draws, the villains.

“Saw” – Still Cutting or Just Plain Dull?

Naturally, I went to see Saw IV and I was rather excited. They’d painted themselves into quite a corner with Saw III and I expected a whole lot of tap dancing to try and get themselves out.

And indeed, tap dance they did. They tap danced like their feet were on fire, bringing in a series of convoluted story elements about business partners and lawyers and former lovers and all sorts of stuff and nonsense that no one even knew was there until they pulled it out of nowhere before unbelieving eyes.

The Critics Were Not Kind

With comments like “as edgy as a rubber knife” and “Director Darren Lynn Bousman’s career consists only of three “Saw” films (II-IV) thus far but it’s safe to say that he pretty much just made the same movie three times.”, Saw IV became a critical whipping boy, and even the audiences were getting divisive.

Has the Jigsaw Just Gone Dull?

Plans are already in the works to shoot Saw V and Saw VI, meaning there won’t be a Halloween without a Saw title until 2010. Reportedly helmed by a new director (Bousman’s out the door on four!), there may yet be some life in this franchise. Or the Saw may be missing its teeth. It remains to be seen, but I’ve just about had it with Saw, and my interest is now limited to seeing how deep this rat hole actually goes.

But for you die-hard buffs out there who want to match wits with the Jigsaw himself, swing over to play our Saw Movie social trivia.
