The Signal: “Cell” light?
Not too long ago, Stephen King came out with a new book called Cell. In truly Stephen King fashion, it posited a “signal” that drove those who heard it on their cell phones insane and gave them various psychic powers as well as a kind of “hive-mind” status. The movie version of Cell is projected to be released in 2009 and directed by none other than horror waste of space Eli Roth who is probably already biting his nails when he realizes there’s absolutely nothing resembling torture porn going on in Stephen King.
It would seem, however, that King and co. have been beaten to the punch, as the theatrical release The Signal is well on its way, and has already been making the film festival rounds for a limited release February of 2008.
The Signal: Knockoff or Incredible Coincidence?
The book Cell was published in January 2006. Almost exactly one year later, in January of 2007, The Signal was launched at Sundance. Filmmakers at this point are giving serious sidelong glances to The Signal–though it can take years to shoot a film, most are familiar with at least one example of films shot within forty-eight hours. Here is the trailer:

Comments on the trailer at YouTube suggest that the three films that comprise The Signal were shot–get this–four years ago.
Which, if true, makes one wonder if Stephen King might not have to shell out some go-away money to keep these guys from suing HIM.
