The UK’s Newest Models are Made of Clay
If you’re like me, you’re sick of seeing the latest fashions modeled on people who don’t look like anyone you’ve ever met in your life.
It’s either a bunch of sullen, hard-muscled teenagers, or some woman with ridiculous ’80s hair, or “plus
sized” women with perfect figures who never exceed a size 12. It’s always the same.
But the upscale U.K. department store Harvey Nichols has changed all that with their new models: Wallace and Gromit.
The claymation figures first stepped onto the scene in 1989 with the short cartoon “A Grand Day Out,” created by Nick Park of Aardman Animations. Since then, two more shorts and a feature-length film have made Wallace and Gromit fixtures of popular culture, even all the way across the pond in the U.S.
Arthur Sheriff, spokesman for Nick Parks’s Aardman films, said: ‘We were approached by Harvey Nichols because they wanted a worldwide icon from the Bristol area. We were immensely flattered. We think Wallace, Gromit and Lady Tottington look fantastic.’
And they do. A new set of photographs shows Wallace, Gromit, and Lady Tottington from Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in designer clothes - suits for Wallace, fashionable scarves for Gromit, and an elegant gown for Totty.
Sure, it’s more of a novelty than anything, but as a marketing technique - I’ve seen much worse. It’s not like a size 0 model is really going to give you any idea how the clothes will look on your body, so why not just use some familiar cartoon faces?
I’m not sure if the designers specifically made mini clothes for the clay models, or if there are some life-size Wallace and Gromit models lying around somewhere, but either way…awesome. (What? CG? Don’t you ruin this for me. Don’t do it.)
We need to bring this to America. I would absolutely buy from a line of clothes that modeled on, say, popular Pixar characters. This has almost unlimited potential! Although I’m not sure how, for instance, Nemo would model clothes. Maybe he should model snorkel masks or something.
Hey, they found something for Gromit.
