According to a Hollywood adage, everyone wants to direct. Many people shouldn’t. Zach Braff, on the other hand, star of the wildly popular irreverent medical show Scrubs, is free to ply his trade whenever he likes.

Garden State was somewhat of a cultural phenomenon when it came out. Written, directed by and starring Braff, alongside starlet Natalie Portman, it told the simple story of a young man trying to enjoy his life. Over-medicated and lonely, he seeks a meaningful connection with someone. Anyone. Drugs and friendship both fall flat.

Then he meets Sam. Sam is played by Portman with exactly the sort of youthful exuberance that Braff’s character doesn’t have. She lives the kind of life that he longs for. All the same, he can’t bring himself to leave his Los Angeles life behind to return to his home, the Garden State.

Garden State certainly suffered from overexposure, but that doesn’t make it any less of a film. It was the brainchild of one man, who had never written or directed a movie before, and it shines.

Did You Know?

The helmet Sam wears in Garden State is actually a rugby scrum-cap.

The version of the song “Such Great Heights” that appears in the film is by Iron and Wine. Contrary to popular belief, the original version is the more electro-pop recording by The Postal Service; Iron and Wine recorded a more mellow cover.
