Tila Tequila is Single Again? Surely Not.

Five years ago, could we, as a society, possibly conceive of a “MySpace star?” While a social networking site sounds like a good niche advertising technique, MySpace doesn’t seem like the place where a star is born. But Tila Tequila overcame those odds to become…something.

Every article on Tila calls her a “MySpace and reality T.V. star.” They don’t really know how to describe her, because “reality T.V. star” would imply that she won Survivor or something. “MySpace star” is just baffling, especially for the generation that doesn’t realize iPod is a brand name.

For those who, like me, have avoided as much Tila exposure as they can, here’s the rundown: made famous by a handful of Playboy shoots, Tila gained an Internet fanbase through her music on MySpace. She had a few passing roles in T.V. and film, made a few magazine’s Hot lists, and finally bagged herself an MTV show.

A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila featured the openly - some would say aggressively - bisexual model made 16 straight men and 16 lesbian women compete for her affections, with each group being unaware of her bisexuality and the possibility of competition from the other sex. Because she ultimately chose one of the men, Bobby Banhart, recent speculation has questioned her sexual orientation. It seems like the odds were a straight 50/50, but what do I know?

Now, shockingly enough, the two have broken up. Who saw this coming? Certainly not MTV, who, I’m sure, didn’t suggest a sequel to the show immediately. Seriously. This is news? Reality dating show contestants breaking up? As we all learned from Family Guy, it’s just T.V. Anyone who expects the couples to last is deluded.

Now making the rounds for her new show, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila 2, Tila blames the media and Bahhart’s interest in self-promotion for the tragic breakup. She seems surprised that he might have been using his stint on the show as a publicity tool, and goes on to say, eloquently:

“The media also makes it hard on us. The media says something about him, and he retaliates, and I’m like ‘That’s not how it was.’ And it ends up being, like, unfortunate.”

I have no idea what that means, honestly.
