Today, I Am Happy. Be Amazed.
Okay, okay. Got to breathe…got to calm down. Calm blue ocean, calm blue ocean…happy place….HAPPY PLLAAAACE….
I can’t DO it any more! This is TOO GOOD! Seriously, THIS IS TOO GOOD! Man, I’m punching caps unrestrainedly here–this is beyond belief! By now you’re probably all wondering what’s got my proverbial knickers in the equally proverbial twist, and I’ll be more than happy to fill you in.
See, a few months back, a great thing happened. We got our first George Romero zombie movie in years that had no connections to some big-bucks studio who was going to screw it up with more executive meddling than the entire Fox network. It was given somewhat of a mixed reception, with people either loving it (like myself) or hating it (like brain-damaged troglodytes and Zac Snyder). Okay, I’m just kidding on that last one, but still. It’s great news to a chunk of the audience of the last one that shooting on Diary of the Dead 2 will begin in September, and a synopsis is available. Check it out:
Our heroes, trapped in the mansion where we left them, battle waves of ravenous zombies, barely escaping alive. In search of a safe place to settle, they commandeer an abandoned ferry and sail to a deserted island, only to find that it is already populated by a civilization of the dead. Told in the same first-person style that distinguished “George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead”, the next episode of the saga is a violent siege set in the middle of nowhere, a desperate struggle for survival, and peace, between two tribes: the living and the living dead.
Tell me that’s not forty pounds of kickass in a five pound sack. Go ahead. Try. You can’t.
I’m all sorts of looking forward to this–I’d even go against my rhetoric and drive to a theatre for this one–but with shooting scheduled to begin in September, well, we could have it in time for Halloween, or it could be another January release. You never know, so let’s go off and kill some time until fresh Romero zombie joy hits with Dead series trivia on Kwanzoo.

How did you feel about the Dawn of the Dead remake? I was actually disappointed. The best part was the intro with the Johnny Cash song. I saw that on youtube and that’s what made me want to see the movie. Anyway, just curious.
Craig–I am happy to opine about horror flicks with little or no provocation at all. Please, feel free to ask about whatever you like. You’re absolutely right, by the way–Zac Snyder wouldn’t know a zombie movie from his own ass in the dark with both hands, a flashlight and a copy of Gray’s Anatomy. He ruined Dawn of the Dead, especially compared to the original. No bikers, no zombie pie fight, none of the occasional sparks of life and humor that Romero injected into the original. Not even any of the buildup, like the helicopter going over the countryside! These putzes just WANDER into the mall like it’s nothing at all. I think you’re a hundred percent right in that the first twenty minutes was the best part of the whole thing. I did enjoy how Snyder showed how quick the world goes from normal to screwed when it comes to the interjection of zombies (my personal fave scene? that kickass shot where the car drives into the gas pump.) but he just couldn’t hold it together. Again, especially, compared to the original.
