Tomatoes and Raspberries

It’s one thing for the Academy to cast their votes when awards season comes around, but critics have voted the whole year with their reviews. Shouldn’t there be awards for these movies? Well, now there is. Sort of.

Tomatoes and RaspberriesThe Golden Tomatoes, sponsored by the popular RottenTomatoes.com, calculates positive vs. negative reviews to come up with the year’s best (and worst) films. It divides films into many categories: Wide vs. Limited release, twelve different genres, UK, Australia, and others. Each category features a top ten list, with the best-reviewed film taking the top spot.

In Wide Release this year, Ratatouille takes the cake with a 96% Fresh rating. Its runners-up, from 2-10, are: No Country for Old Men, The Bourne Ultimatum, Sicko, Hairspray, Juno, Knocked Up, Gone Baby Gone, Enchanted, and Zodiac. For Limited Release, the Irish musical Once takes #1 at 98%.

Unfortunately, the Golden Tomatoes is sadly lacking in the Moldy Tomato department. the chick flick Because I Said So takes top honors, but one list can’t possibly cover all the bases. And that’s why we have the Razzies.

Scheduled to air on February 23rd, the Razzies have announced their nominees for Worst of 2007. Picture, Actor, Actress, Couple, Remake, Prequel, Screenplay, Director, Horror…the list goes on and on, nearly as long as Oscar acceptance speeches before they instituted a limit.

Worst Picture nominations are Bratz, Daddy Day Camp, I Know Who Killed Me, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, and, of course, Norbit. Personally I don’t think Bratz has much chance at taking the prize, since it had such a limited audience to begin with. Chuck and Larry, Day Camp, and Norbit are the most likely contenders in my book.

Check out the rest of the Razzie nominees, and feel free to express your rage that your favorite bad movie didn’t make it. There’s always next year.
