Top “Sopranos” Episodes to Buy on iTunes (Season Six)

Good news, digital media fans: HBO has now made some of their most popular shows available for purchase on iTunes. Ranging from $1.99 to $2.99 per episode, premium programming like Deadwood and Flight of the Conchords is now available at non-premium prices.

If you’ve waited until now to jump into David Chase’s award-winning mafia dramedy The Sopranos, you might wonder where to begin. Unfortunately, seasons 2-5 are still missing from the iTunes lineup, but don’t let that stop you. Here are some of the highlights, which should leave you hungry for more.

Season Six

1. The Ride
In a surprising turn of events, the church tries to extort money from the mafia. Insisting that they need more money to pull together the annual carnival for the Feast of St. Elzear, the new priest asks Paulie Walnuts for more money. He refuses, but when one of the rides breaks down with Janice and baby on board, a feud erupts between her husband Bobby and skinflint Paulie. Meanwhile, Tony and Christopher have a theft-related bonding experience, and Chris decides to take his pregnant girlfriend to Vegas and make an honest woman of her. But Carmela’s encounter with Adriana’s mother at the Feast makes her suspicious about Adriana’s sudden disappearance. Tony puts her at ease, but for how long…?

2. Walk Like a Man
Anthony, Jr. begins to show serious indications of the same anxiety and depression that sent his father to Dr. Melfi’s office in the pilot. The newly-married Christopher is, as always, feuding with Paulie Walnuts (and his sobriety isn’t going so well either). As conflicts bubble and tensions run high, the show prepares itself to say goodbye forever.

3. Kennedy and Heidi
A fan favorite, this episode sees one of the cruelest and coldest acts Tony has ever performed. In his conflict between business and personal concerns, he’s mostly chosen to be compassionate to those who deserve it - those he loves. But that can’t last forever, and in this episode Tony makes an important choice that will haunt him. Unable to deal with the implications, he flees to Vegas and loses himself in drugs (and a beautiful woman). His gambling success indicates an upturn in his luck, and Tony congratulates himself on a job well done.

4. The Blue Comet
Another innocent lamb is led to the slaughter in this tale of violence, intrigue, and toy trains. It all begins with Dr. Melfi finally accepting that Tony might just be an unreachable, manipulative psychopath. For once in their professional relationship, SHE cuts HIM off. While sister Janice tries to get some money out of Tony to help support Uncle Junior, two tragic deaths in the Soprano crew send everyone reeling. In fear for their lives, Tony and friends flee to a safe house.

5. Made in America

Perhaps no penultimate episode of any television program in the history of entertainment has ever been so sharply dividing. Highly anticipated and constantly speculated about, “Made in America” was the kind of show that would stick in people’s memories forever, no matter what happened. Sopranos fans remember where they were, what they were doing, and how they felt when the screen suddenly cut to black just as Journey sang “don’t stop -.” Some cursed their VCRs, others their T.V.s, until the learned that it was supposed to end that way. Some were angry, but others lauded the brilliance of David Chase and his willingness to leave everyone hanging. The great thing about “Made in America” is that you are free to decide how the story really ends. But, of course, like real life, it never really ends at all.
