Top Ten Emmy Finalists: Who Will Make the Cut?
Ladies and gentlemen, THE EMMY FINALISTS IN COMEDY AND DRAMA HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED! I’m so excited I just got spittle all over my monitor. I’ll tackle comedy first, because comedy is actually enjoyable and I know a lot more about it.
Curb Your Enthusiasm - no surprises here. The industry loves Larry David.
Entourage - again, shocking. No.
Family Guy - if the voters watched the last two seasons, FG is screwed. Except for the pirate episode. That was pure gold.
Flight of the Conchords - OH HECK TO THE YES.
The Office - everyone loves this show, to the point where all the positivity bores me.
Pushing Daises - barely heard of this. Carry on.
30 Rock - everyone loves Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy.
Two and a Half Men - Ugh. Just ugh.
Ugly Betty - UGH.
Weeds - not seen this one, but I’ve heard it’s not as fantastic as they say.
I don’t really watch drama, because real life drama is much more entertaining. However, I will comment on the picks because it’s my duty as a journalist who has a minimum word count to fulfill. “Meh” generally means I know it but haven’t seen it, “what” means I haven’t heard of it, and everything else is self-explanatory.
Boston Legal - meh
Damages - what
Dexter - I’m fond of Dexter.
Friday Night Lights - meh
Grey’s Anatomy - Ugh.
House - LUPUS, etc.
Lost - meh
Mad Men - what
The Tudors - meh
The Wire - meh
So, the question remains - which shows will make the Final Five? I don’t know, I’m just a reporter! However, I can guess that Curb, Office, and Rock will definitely survive in Comedy. Many have also predicted Ugly Betty as a finalist, and I, for one, cannot imagine why. It’s just ugh. Why do people watch it? Can any Ugly Betty fans explain this to me?
Drama is a tougher nut to crack, even more people who have actually watched the shows. Most critic picks are those I’ve never heard of, and as much as I’d like Dexter to take home the prize, I’m not entirely sure that the voters feel comfortable with a serial killer - even under the Code of Harry.

Don’t judge Betty by its sophomore run. It’s generally understood, by fans, critics, and producers there were failings, and the numbers make it clear, 15 million to start, finishing up last season with 8.75 million. EP, Silvio Horta careened out of strike-ravaged season 2 on the strength of the original premise and not much else.
Betty’s appeal? She’s a strong, fish-out-of-water heroine succeeding where she has no business succeeding. And with its moral and compassionate undercurrent, UB’s the underdog’s weekly vicarious triumph.
Really, emphasizing and celebrating the darker side of human nature that is most of network programming, isn’t risqué anymore, it isn’t clever anymore, it’s just… boring.
Just my .02.
