T.V. Trivia: “Sopranos” Home Movies? David Chase Goes to Hollywood

For many, the first glimpse of Tony Soprano leaning back in Dr. Jennifer Melfi’s office was the beginning of a years-long love affair with one of HBO’s most popular original series. Real-life fans of The Sopranos include mafia, FBI agents, and viewers like you - very few people can find something bad to say about it.

Show creator David Chase, who had previously worked on shows like The Rockford Files and Northern Exposure, finally gained notoriety as the brains behind this hit series. An Italian-American like his most famous characters, Chase (nĂ© DeCesare) suffered under the yolk of oppressive parents; his “drama queen” of a mother would later serve as the main inspiration for the character of Livia Soprano.

After battling depression for most of his life, he won seven Emmys for his outstanding work in the world of television. And now, finally, he’s getting his chance to shine in a slightly different medium.

When it was first announced that The Sopranos was ending, many speculated on the possibility of a silver screen adventure for Tony and his family. While Chase neither confirms nor denies these rumors, we now have news that he is making a movie - just not a mafia one.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the studio described the project as an original drama. A source familiar with the deal said the drama will not revisit the world of the Mafia, which provided the basis for “The Sopranos.”

“He’s been there, done that,” the insider said. “He’s moving on.”

In fact, Chase is still mulling what exactly the project will encompass, and he’s expected to take his time in delivering his script.

If, like me, you worship at the altar of David Chase’s storytelling, stay tuned for further developments.
