T.V. Trivia: WGA Strike Still Hurting T.V.
Just because the writers are hard at work after the industry-stopping WGA strike, doesn’t mean that everything is back to normal in the world of television. The latest numbers from Neilsen indicate that viewership of the four major networks, ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, was down 9% from this period last year.
Can you blame the strike for this? Alan Wurtzel of NBC isn’t ready to commit to once explanation: “The strike had a number of impacts, but as with everything it’s never very clear or direct or black and white.”
Unsurprisingly, shows with continuity and an ongoing storyline seemed to suffer the most from the strike. Grey’s Anatomy is one; comedies, on the other hand, performed best out of all the major genres. So well, in fact, that CBS is considering expanding their Monday comedy night into another night of the week.
All of this will have an impact on the studios’ ultimate decisions for next season, but in the meantime, all we can do is speculate.
