Tyler Perry Is Beneath My Contempt
No, really. Beneath my contempt. If my contempt were here, then Tyler Perry would be somewhere around the bottom of the page. Seriously.
Oh, sure, I never liked Tyler Perry’s work very much–struck me as yet another black guy who saw Eddie Murphy in “The Nutty Professor”, said “hey, I can dress like a woman too!” and came up with Madea. Real original, guy. But now I’ve got a whole new reason to dislike Tyler Perry.
Because he’s a truly colossal prick.
Some of the big news of the weekend–which has always been a historically slow time for entertainment news since most entertainment productions stop for the weekend–was that Tyler Perry was opening a brand new studio for some reason called, without a TOUCH of egomania, Tyler Perry Films. What does he do for an encore, say that all his films are created in “Tyler Perry-vision”? And of course, he went on this deeply soulful and utterly Christian rant about how he “knew spiritually” that he was “in the wrong place”.
Which he then followed up by firing a whole bunch of writers from his alleged comedy House Of Payne and suing an 89-year-old man.
Wonder if he knew, spiritually, that it was time to fire those thieving incompetents that are solely and totally responsible for House Of Payne being derivative garbage and dared to seek union representation. Or that that 89-year-old man was just BEGGING for a lawsuit.
Of course, Perry’s got counterstories ready that DON’T make him look like an evil monster–how far you believe them is totally up to you. The key points to remember are that he DID fire four writers who were in the process of seeking union representation, and that he IS in the process of suing an 89-year-old man over property issues. Follow the above links if you don’t believe me. The question is, how much of this is Tyler Perry the poor put-upon victim, and how much of it is Tyler Perry the Christian poseur / jackass who thinks he’s a lot bigger than he actually is?
The fact that he would do any of these things sure suggests that it’s not victim, at least from where I sit, and thus I say he is-or at the very least his actions are–beneath my contempt.
