Vantage Points on Vantage Point
Number one at the box office this week is highly anticipated political thriller Vantage Point, about eight strangers who witness a presidential assassination. Each one has a piece of the puzzle, but how do they all fit together?
Not too well, apparently. The votes are counted, the reviews are in, and Vantage Point remains at a dismal 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, the internet’s most trusted review aggregator.
While some reviewers are forgiving, calling it mindlessly enjoyable entertainment, others are downright hostile. Ty Burr accuses it of “[reducing] global terrorism to a Rubik’s Cube suitable for an evening’s enjoyment. If that doesn’t make you vaguely ill, by all means take this thriller for the shallow, gimmicky ‘ride’ it aspires to be.”
24 fans might have flocked to the theater, but if critical reviews are any indication Vantage Point isn’t destined for the #1 slot for very long. Go bowling instead, and wait for next week’s offerings.
