Video Game Trivia: The Snake is Vanquished!

mario-kart.jpgHere is the best Nintendo news I’ve heard in a long time: snaking has been left out of Mario Kart Wii. The thing that singlehandedly ruined competitive online races in Mario Kart DS, that broke many an N64 controller with MK64 and forced the all-too-wide track design of Mario Kart Double Dash, has finally been laid to rest. Three cheers for bringing the fun back to Mario Kart!

Snaking - or the act of willingly making your thumbs bleed - has been a thorn in my side since Nintendo introduced it in Mario Kart 64. It’s a trick of determination, not skill, and it has soured many a race for me. It’s for people who play games solely to win, ignoring the noble ground of fun video games were built upon. And now that it has been eliminated, I can once again play this franchise without needing to stick my hand in a freezer afterwards.

I still have no idea what to expect from Mario Kart Wii, but I can at least sleep confidently knowing the most insipid addition has been eliminated. Now if they can shift the focus back to racing and bring back Koopa Troopa, we may have something truly special next month.
