Video games: Thursday News Roundup
- Warren Ellis, profane comic book writer, sent out a note remarking that he worked on the plot for EA’s upcoming Dead Space. So, has the protagonist been technologically enhanced to become something more than human? Gonna guess yes.
- Brett Favre got traded to the Jets last night. That’s unfortunate for EA, whose Madden ‘09 boxes have the quarterback in his old Packers uniform. EA will be offering an alternate cover to print out and slip in the case, as well as a downloadable roster change to put Favre on the Jets.
- Gamasutra put up an interview with Capcom’s Hironobu Takeshita on designing a completely retro game. It’s a challenge when the tools used to create the originals just don’t exist anymore.
Mr. Inafune had to tell us to redo half of the characters. He brought us in the room and said, “These characters are too big and bulky, with too many lines. We want to keep it simple.”
Showing us how to keep it simple opened up a new world for us. We could see how the simple characters look better, and you can just picture how they move. He really brought that to life for us. Even though the characters are simple, they still stand out. They still make an impression on you. And I think that’s what was important.
For the team, when they realized that, they were able to bring their sensibilities to the game. We are limited, but in that sense, it did open up the creative tunnels.
Living as I do with someone who loves intentionally low-poly art, I can see the appeal there.
