Vin Diesel - The Standard Bearer For Geekdom
We all remember Vin Diesel from his various exploits - Riddick from Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, his foray into Dungeons and Dragons… he’s even got a mention in World of Warcraft, (seen at left) for crying out loud. So it should come as little surprise to anyone that his next role, Babylon AD, is going to be nice and science fiction-y.
Babylon AD puts him into the role of a mercenary on an escort mission, which is only a small deviation from his Riddick roles. And frankly, I’m okay with this. What some people might call typecasting, I like to think of as sticking to your strengths. Look what happened when he tried to break out of that role with that idiotic movie about being a babysitter. That was just sad. What came out of Red Baby was actually more palatable than watching Vin Diesel try to babysit.
Since Vin now pretty much carries the mantle of hope for nerds everywhere - this guy actually plays D&D, kids - he would do well to remember the nerds he represents so well, and stick to those roles that hold nerd appeal. Science fiction is definitely high up on that list. Though he’s welcome to continue forays into action and maybe the occasional horror flick to stretch his wings creatively, it seems to be a good idea to keep Vin out of the sugary family comedies.
Have we learned nothing from Hulk “Santa With Muscles” Hogan?
