What This World Needs is More Organ-Centric Musicals
Repo! The Genetic Opera. What a title.
Trying to explain the film makes you sound every bit as schizophrenic as the new trailer, which features familiar faces like Paul Sorvino, Alexa Vega, Paris HIlton, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Anthony Head.
There’s even the sweet-voiced singer Sarah Brightman, who plays - surprisingly - a singer.
In general, only the hardcore horror sites are bothering to cover Repo! news. This is mostly due to the direction of Darren Bousman, most famous for Saws II, III, and IV. They’re barely horror movies and Repo! looks even less so, which makes me wonder how much of an audience it will have.
I’m not sure who Repo! is meant to appeal to. There is no target audience for a musical about a dystopian future where people are killed to repossess transplanted organs. It had success as a stage musical on Broadway, but Broadway is exactly the kind of place where oddities are praised. Will Repo! survive translation to the big screen?
One thing is for sure: it’s about as visually appealing as a movie can be. Somehow both vivid and dark, the look of the film perfectly fits the feeling left behind by this new trailer, namely: Whoa.
Not “whoa” like “this is going to be the best movie of the year,” just “whoa” like “whoa.” I don’t really know what to process what’s happening. I can’t predict exactly what will happen in this film. I can’t predict how people will react. It’s a little too self-consciously zany for the Rocky Horror crowd, though they’re the only subculture that might, as a whole, endorse it.
Will Repo! find a home in the dark corners of pop culture? Will it be a cult classic, or is it trying too hard?
I can’t imagine. The pitch must have sounded like the drug-fueled ramblings of a college freshman arguing against the commercialization of organ donation. But maybe, just maybe, it’ll turn out to be a decent film.
